Fluid attack plea.

A MAN is in hospital after a mystery liquid was squirted into his face.

The 33-year-old man was involved in an altercation with a man and a woman outside of the Booze Cellar on Sunderland Road, Gateshead, on Monday afternoon. The attacker punched and kicked the man before squirting him in the eyes with an unknown substance, which may have permanently blinded him.

He is currently in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, having been transferred there from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

His condition is believed to be stable, but police said it is not yet known if the liquid has caused permanent damage to the man's eyesight. In a statement, Northumbria Police appealed for witnesses to the attack.

They said: "Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 669 13/06/16."
