Flights chaos as a pothole shuts runway.
THOUSANDS of holidaymakers were stranded at Gatwick when a pothole opened up in the runway.
Dozens of flights were scrapped as workers rushed to fix the damage. And 17 incoming planes were diverted to other airports, including Nottingham, 180 miles away, and Bournemouth, 115 miles away. As tempers frayed, passenger, Jo Gilbert said: "My flight to Barcelona was cancelled and we've been here in the terminal. They're not letting anyone out. Everyone is losing their cool." Some flights were able to get away during the hourlong closure on Sunday by using an emergency runway.
A Gatwick official did not know what caused the pothole but said: "Safety of passengers is our priority."
