Fix our roads? They can't be.. EXCLUSIVE warning sign to council.

Byline: By Craig McDonald

AN ISLANDER'S roads protest has hit a bum note with council bosses.

Ian Small has erected placards with the word ARSED on them in a protest over the state of the roads on Arran.

Dad-of-three Ian, 54, said: "The slogan stands for Arran Roads Slowly Eroding Down and it's my attempt to raise awareness over the shocking state of the roads.

"I thought it sums up the council's attitude over the roads - they can't be arsed doing anything about it."

Electrical contractor Ian has been a community councillor in his home village of Brodick since 1995. His roads campaign fell foul of council chiefs within 24 hours.

He said: "I put them up on Friday and attached them to existing road signs.

"I got a letter from the council the next day saying they 'noted I was erecting signs attached to various items of road furniture'.

"They say I have until Wednesday to take them down or they will remove them and charge me.

"I am planning my next course of action. If need be, I will take them off the road signs and stick them on the fences next to the signs. I'm not giving in here."

One local, who did not want to be named, added: "Everyone is fully behind him.

"He put his biggest sign up near the ferry terminal and people were driving off tooting their horns in support.

"Despite the best efforts of North Ayrshire Council, the condition of the roads has deteriorated."

Ian recently had an accident in his van after hitting a pothole in Lamlash.

He said: "It cost me more than pounds 1000 in repairs. Friends have had similar nasty experiences and we're saying enough is enough."
