Five-year-old boy falls to his death in Abu Dhabi.

A five-year-old boy has fallen to his death from the balcony of his home in the capital.

Abu Dhabi Police said on Sunday that the incident happened on Saturday evening at an apartment block on Muroor Road.

The Arab boy, who was autistic, was at home with his parents but sneaked

out onto the balcony without their knowledge.

Police say that initial investigations revealed that the youngster climbed onto a concrete ledge and over the 1m high balcony.

"While climbing the boy lost balance and fell hard onto the ground below, he died on the spot," said Brigadier General Maktoum Al Sharifi, the head of the Abu Dhabi Metropolitan Police Department.

Police urged parents to always close the doors leading to balconies and to strictly monitor the movements of their children while at home so as to avoid such incidents.

Earlier this year a three-year-old girl called Maryam plunged to death from her home on the fifth floor of an Abu Dhabi tower block.

Maryam had been left home alone and police said they had previously warned her parents about allowing the toddler onto the balcony as neighbours had seen her hanging dangerously on the edge before.
