Five years' jail for Nabeel Rajab for spreading false information.

OPPOSITION activist Nabeel Rajab has been jailed for five years for spreading false information on social media about Saudi-led military action in Yemen.

He was found guilty of disseminating false information through his Twitter account by the High Criminal Court yesterday.

This is in addition to a two-year sentence he is already serving for undermining security by disseminating false information during TV interviews.

Both the High Criminal Appeals Court and Cassation Court have already rejected his appeals against the two-year sentence, upholding a guilty verdict for spreading false news in interviews with foreign media outlets including Iranian TV channel Al Alam.

He has also been charged with insulting the Interior Ministry and the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre, as well as spreading false news about Bahrain in an article published by French newspaper Le Monde.

In addition, he is facing an additional charge for an op-ed he allegedly wrote for The New York Times newspaper.

He has been in custody since May last year and will complete his two-year sentence in July 2019.
