Five reasons to eat nutmeg.

1 NUTMEG contains many essential volatile oils like myristicin, elemicin and safrole, which give a sweet aromatic flavour to nutmeg.

2 Nutmeg is a good source of minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, zinc and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure.

Manganese and copper are used by the body as co-factors for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase, which destroys damaging free radicals. Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, which gives the red colour to red blood cells.

3 It's also rich in B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin A and antioxidants like betacarotene.

4 Nutmeg oil contains eugenol, which, along with oil of cloves, has been used in dentistry for toothache relief because of their local anaesthetic effect.

5 The oil can also be used as a massage oil to lessen muscular pain and the pain of aching joints.
