Fitness pair Stuart and Adam in national final.

AN APPRENTICE exercise and fitness instructor and a personal training student have made it through to the finals of a national fitness trainer competition.

Adam Dalton, aged 20, and 24-year-old Stuart MacDonald, from Birmingham Metropolitan College, are representing the West Midlands in the CYQ Fitness Trainer Competition finals on May 2 after winning the regional heat.

They proved their calibre to competition judges after carrying out a consultation process with a "mock client" who described a specific injury or condition they needed training advice on. Adam and Stuart then had just 30 minutes to deliver a personal induction, followed by a training programme and evaluation on their client in a way that showcased their communication skills and technical competence in instructing a client to use a range of gym equipment.

"We're both feeling quite confident about being in the national finals," said Adam. "A lot of the work I did during the competition was second nature because I'm constantly learning and demonstrating ways to help people achieve their fitness goals and make sure they spend their time in the college gyms effectively."

Stuart is also looking forward to the finals. "It's a big opportunity to represent the exercise and fitness industry and support my long-term goal of being a fully qualified, professional personal trainer and instructor," he said.

"It also gives me another chance to show the experts more of what I can do and to raise awareness of the importance of working towards an approved training programme so that your health and wellbeing is better maintained."

Launched this year, the CYQ Fitness Trainer Competition has been designed to reflect the knowledge and skills demanded by the active leisure sector. The competition seeks to recognise and celebrate the excellence of fitness instructors and personal trainers educated within further education colleges across the UK.

"It's a marvelous achievement for Birmingham Met to have two accomplished individuals representing us at such a high level," said associate director, Celia Robotham.

The national finals take place in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire.
