Fisher Scientific and VWR increase product offerings for Europe. (Executive Briefing).

Middlesex, UK 10/22/02 and Edison, NJ 10/24/02 -- The two dominant laboratory distribution companies have secured new product agreements for Europe. Thermo Hybaid has announced that VWR International will distribute its products, which includes thermo cyclers and hybridization equipment, in Europe. VWR currently distributes Thermo Labsystems, Thermo EC and Thermo Spectronic products in Europe. New Brunswick Scientific has signed a three-year exclusive distribution agreement with Fisher Scientific for the NMS C-Line of lab shakers and accessories for Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Thereafter, automatic renewals apply for one-year periods. Excluded under the agreement are the Innova brand shakers, which NBS directly markets and distributes through other channels.

This agreement is further evidence of the growing competition between Fisher and VWR, particularly in Europe. It also indicates that such distributors are becoming more entrenched in the European market. This development has also benefited from the use of a common currency and economic uncertainty driving pricing competition. As Thermo Hybaid's General Sales Strategy Manager put it, "We recognize that the marketplace within Europe is evolving, with customers increasingly demanding the rationalization of their purchasing to a smaller number of suppliers."
