Fish supper is still No 1 for Geordies.

Geordies prefer fish and chips over any other take-away according to new research.

The Sea Fish Industry Authority survey shows more than twice as many fish and chip meals are bought each year than any other choices.

Seafish chief executive John Rutherford said: "It seems there's no knocking fish and chips from its position as the nation's favourite take-away."

The research also reveals Friday is still the most popular day to eat fish and chips, with 20% of home meals are bought from a local chippie.

And the figures reveal the fish and chip sector, worth pounds 1 billion, continues to grow with over 11,500 fish and chip shops in the UK, serving 250 million portions of fish and chips each year.
