Firearm production by U.S. manufacturers: 1991.

Regular readers of Shooting Industry know that at the end of each year SI offers an extensive graphic report of the firearms production figures compiled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and released to the media under the Freedom of Information Act.

Due to the tremendous volume of information, however, the BATF requires a full year to bring together all of these figures into a comprehensive form, which means that the BATF is currently working on the production figures from last year, 1991, as well as revising the figures from 1990, as some last-minute reports come in.

The figures shown in the charts provided this month are taken from the BATF's Interim Report and may not reflect the final production figures which will be released at the end of the year. Also, the figures shown for 1990 are the final numbers released by the BATF and may be slightly higher than those published in the 1992 SHOT Show issue of Shooting Industry.

The handgun caliber figures shown on the charts include the "range" of calibers between the indicated caliber and the next smaller caliber. For example, the .45 pistol listing includes pistols chambered for both 10mm and .40 S&W. The 9mm listing includes pistols chambered for .38 Super. Because of this generality, these listings will be useful only in a general way. Also, the BATF lists combination guns (rifle/shotgun) in the Shotgun category.

The reader is reminded that these are only interim figures which will undoubtedly be revised upward as more manufacturers report their production figures for 199 1. A more accurate and comprehensive listing will be available in the 1992 SHOT Show issue this December.
