Firearm production by U.S. manufacturers: 1992 mid-year update.

While everyone in the industry awaits Shooting Industry's extensive graphic report on firearms production, import, and export put out by the BATF under the Freedom of Information Act, it does seem like a very long wait between the end of the year and the December disclosure of the final figures.

In order to provide a barometer, this month SI presents our interim figures, released by the BATF in June. Readers should be aware that these figures are only partial tallies, and the figures will undoubtedly be revised upward at the end of the year.

The handgun calibers indicated in the tables represent a "range" of calibers, for example the .50 caliber pistol listing includes everything between 9mm and .50 -- .40, 10mm, .38 Super, .41, etc. The BATF also lists combination guns (rifle/shotgun) in the "shotgun" category.

Astute readers may notice that the numbers in the "January-June" table do not match with the corresponding figures reported in SI's December '93 issue. In order to give our readers a more accurate representation of what these figures mean, we have compared them against last year's interim figures rather than against the 1991 final report. While these figures do not truly represent the number of guns manufactured between January and June, we hope they will give the reader a more accurate feel for the state of the industry as reflected by the companies that have reported their production figures to date. The final figures for 1992 will be reported in December.
