Finnish web site faces libel charges.

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Libel charges have been filed in Finland over Internet pages for the first time.

Askola councillor Jukka Peltonen has been accused of three counts of aggravated defamation on his home pages (http://www.askola.org). Three officials of the town of Askola feel that comments on the web site unfairly criticise the community administration. However Peltonen suspects that the motives of the lawsuit may be political, especially as the web site has been functioning for some time.

The case against Peltonen should go to court in November, reported the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
