Finding an Environmentally Safe Method to Increase Crop Respiration Rates.
Sustainable agriculture has been studied in specific areas, and
this project concentrated on finding an environmentally safe method to
increase crop respiration rates, pH levels (4-10) were varied in order
to determine the optimal range for a set of five specific crops:
Soybean, Cucumber, Garden pea, String bean, and Okra. A respirometer was
used to determine the respiration rates (cc/min) for five grams of the
seedlings exposed to a single pH environment. Each crop had its own
specific optimal range of values for each pH. The string bean seedlings
in pH 6 and pH 8 yielded the maximum values. The mean values were also
calculated and plotted with standard deviations marked. Most of the
crops seemed to yield the highest range of values in the slightly
alkaline or slightly acidic environments.
