AGRASHELL, INC.

ALUCHEM INC.

Offers ground hydrated alumina, calcium carbonate, and magnesium oxide fillers. Produces 21 particle-size distributions from 65% to 100% minus 325 mesh with median particle sizes of 4 to 30 microns, along with "super-fine" ground fillers with a median particle size of 1.5 microns and top-size of less than 10 microns. Twelve grades of hydrated alumina/calcium carbonate blends also available.

ACM-MH 93 magnesium hydroxide serves as a flame-retardant filler, releasing water of hydration like alumina trihydrate, but is able to withstand processing temperatures to 625 F vs. 425-445 F for ATH. Available in 7-micron and 3-micron grinds with or without surface treatment.

AMERICAN METAL FIBERS, INC.

Stainless-steel, brass, low-carbon-steel, and copper fibers available in long-strand fiber reels, needle-punched blankets and chopped fibers. Products exhibit high strength, high modulus, ferromagnetic properties, good corrosion resistance, high melting points, and high electrical and thermal conductivity.

AMERICAN WOOD FIBERS

Manufactures hardwood and softwood flour, which is low in density and has a particle size of 20-200 mesh. Wood flour is scientifically processed in bulk or bagged form.

AMERICA'S BEST BUILDING PRODUCTS

Provides custom-engineered, multi-component reinforcement and filler systems for compounds, fire-retardant and acoustical materials. Proprietary materials and technology may be licensed or marketed through joint-ventures.

Micro-Mix engineered filler system consists of specific proportions of rods, flakes, spheres and irregular particles. Dry blend formulated for high loadings without sacrificing physical properties in polyesters, vinyl esters, epoxies and thermoplastics. Loading may be 60-80% by volume. Sprayed compounds need no rollout. Different systems provide varying degrees of strength, density reduction, flame retardancy, and improved physical advantages and savings in applications such as gelcoat backup, sandwich cores, coatings, tooling and casting compounds. Can be poured, sprayed, extruded or injection molded.

BAKER RUBBER INC. (BRI)

Granulite ground rubber products range in size from 3/4 in. to minus 40 mesh. Products come in several forms including tread material, shaved buffings, whole tire with a small percentage of polyester fiber, and polyester fiber itself. Can be used as flexibilizers, anti-skid additives, extenders, and impact modifiers.

BEKAERT STEEL WIRE CORP.

Beki-Shield fibers made from extremely fine stainless-steel wire are useful where electrical conductivity, EMI/RFI shielding, and static dissipation are required. Product is said to be more conductive than competitive additives, and therefore may be used in smaller amounts. It reportedly provides good EMI shielding without significantly affecting mechanical properties of the compound. It is available as slivers (chopped fiber bundles with no twist), continuous roving, yarn, blended yarn (textile fiber blended with metal fibers), and chopped fibers (packages of parallel cut fibers held together by an adhesive that will dissolve during compounding). Products can be treated with an appropriate sizing.

Beki-Shield GR products are chopped fibers sized with resin-specific sizings. Beki-Shield VK products are continuous-filament tow of various diameters and filaments per tow for weaving and long-fiber processing.

BURGESS PIGMENT CO.

Offers hydrous, anhydrous, and thermooptic aluminum silicates (clays). For opacity and tint strength, Optiwhite and Optiwhite MX aid Ti[O.sub.2] reductions up to 50%. Burgess No. 30 and 30P in PVC offer high electrical resistivity. Burgess KE, in medium voltage, provides maximum long-term wet electrical resistance.

Hydrous and calcined clays provide physical strength, impact resistance, compression resistance, etc. Custom silane-treated products furnished with commercial applications from nylon to crosslinked PE to synthetic elastomers.

BURNS & RUSSELL CO. SPECIALTY CHEMICALS DIV.

Offers low-cost, medium-to-large particle-size surface-modified silicas. F-200 (70-75 mesh), and F400 (42-45 mesh) silicas permit exceptionally high loadings in an array of systems without severe loss of physical or chemical properties. Stain and abrasion resistance and weatherability improved.

F-Series silica fillers are compatible with a range of applications, including backup layers, gel coats, epoxy flooring, and other thermoplastic and thermoset systems. In epoxy and polyester systems, F-400 and F-200 replace up to 75% of resin and replace glass beads and microspheres.

F-1200 and F-1500 are high purity, surface-modified ground silicas with multifunctional surface characteristics. Strong, dense chemical resistance composites formed with use as resin replacement and property enhancement additive. Improvements in physical and chemical properties, such as corrosion and stain resistance; tensile, flexural and impact strengths. Compatible with many polymers, such as polyester polyethylene and polypropylene. Consistent whiteness makes products appropriate where multibatch color uniformity is important.

CABOT CORP. CAB-O-SIL DIV.

Cab-O-Sil fumed silica is a processing aid, thixotrope, and viscosity-control agent in unsaturated polyesters, epoxies, sillcone rubber, and PVC. It is used to control polyester viscosity and prevent sagging or running in gel coats and laminating resins during cure. In liquid resin systems it can also help keep solids, such as fillers, in suspension and evenly dispersed.

In PVC plastisols and calendering, it soaks up excess plasticizer, provides thixotropy, prevents plate-out, and keeps dry compounds free-flowing. Dielectric properties and heat stability also make it a suitable reinforcement for PVC electrical insulation and for silicones.

CANCARB LTD.

Thermax medium thermal carbon black provides low-level structure and large particle size, and comes in several grades. Characteristics include the ability to be compounded at high loadings without degrading polymer properties, thereby reducing overall costs; very low abrasion, resulting in less wear on extrusion equipment; good dielectric properties, chemical and heat resistance; and low sieve residue values--typical values on 325 mesh tests are 2.0 ppm. Applications include XLPE wire and cable insulation, heat-shrinkable connectors and pigmentation.

Fiberflax alumina-silica fiber is a reinforcing filler with reportedly excellent physical properties, low thermal expansion, thermal stability, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and resistance to moisture absorption. Fibers available in a variety of lengths, diameters, surface areas and chemistries, which are modified by surface treatments and removal of unfiberized particulate.

Fiberfrax-reinforced composites offer retention of physical properties at elevated temperatures compounded with materials reinforced with fiberglass and provide wear resistance and retention of physical properties after exposure to water.

THE CARBORUNDUM CO. BORON NITRIDE DIV.

Boron nitride, which has a structure similar to graphite, is a specialty multi-functional additive available in various mesh sizes. It adds lubricity and thermal conductivity, but unlike graphite, is electrically insulating rather than conductive.

CATAPHOTE INC.

Solid glass microspheres in a range of sizes reinforce and extend all thermosets and most thermoplastics used in injection molding, extrusion, compression molding and open-mold casting. For a strong interfacial bond, spheres are treated with silane or other coatings. They are said to increase flow and ease of extrusion, to raise compressive strength, stiffness and abrasion resistance, to reduce creep, water absorption and shrinkage, and to give better mold fill and more uniform cooling, which can cut injection cycles by 20%.

CELITE CORP.

Super Floss, Celite White Mist and Super Fine Super Floss are diatomaceous silicas (diatomite) used as antiblock agents in film grades of LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE. Addition rates, depending on type of film-grade polymer, ranges from 1000 to 10,000 ppm. Diatomite lends itself well to masterbatching. Levels of 50% by weight is common. Super Floss is the preferred product for most antiblocking uses offering good optical properties vs. antiblock efficiency at an economical cost.

CLAREMONT FLOCK CORP.

Manufactures cotton, nylon and other synthetic-fiber filler flocks used in formulations.

COLORCO INC.

Colored or noncolored concentrates containing talc, calcium carbonate or other fillers are available for most thermoplastics.

Marketing agent for expanded glass spheres and licensing of technology for production of cellular, void-filled glass spheres. Spheres range in sizes from 0.5-1 mm to 10-20 mm, and are used as a lightweight filler and reinforcement in addition to increasing thermal insulation value of the mix.

Offers concentrates containing different levels of clay and talc for styrenics, polyolefins and most thermoplastics.

CUSTOM GRINDERS SALES, INC.

Produces ground alumina trihydrate, alumina trihydrate/calcium carbonate blends, and calcium sulfate. Custom grinds and blends available.

DEGUSSA CORP.

Aerosil 130, 200, 300 and 380 are pyrogenic fumed silicas used as thixotropes and reinforcing fillers for silicone rubber, and as additives to prevent plateout in calendered PVC. Aerosil R 972 is a hydrophobic pyrogenic silica used as a reinforcing filler for silicone rubber and as a free-flow additive where moisture pickup could cause caking problems.

Aluminum oxide C is a pyrogenic alumina used as an antistatic agent for granular plastics.

Sipernat 22LS, FK500LS, and Sipernat 44 precipitated silicas are used as antiblocking agents in blown PP film. Sipernat 22LS and FK500LS also used to prevent plateout in PVC calendered films. Sipernat 22, 22S, 50, and 50S act as anticaking aids or can be used to convert liquids into easy-to-disperse powders. Hydrophobic Sipernat D17 and D11 are used as anticaking agents for extremely hygroscopic powders, and FK140 and FK160 as reinforcing fillers in silicone rubber.

OK412, OK500, HK188 and TS100 tatting agents for PVC and coil coatings also produced.

D.J. ENTERPRISES INC.

Offers Econ-Glass PER solid glass beads in nominal 50-mesh size, and Sillum PL-200 flame-retardant filler blend of alumina and silica.

Sillum-200 Q/P is a noncombustible, chemically stable, inert alumina silicate, which is processed to eliminate any organic tramp elements that could modify performance. Processing the material to a free-flowing bead (standard 44-75 micron screen analysis) enables easy blending with liquids or powders. Products is insoluble, non-thixotropic, and nonhygroscopic; gives excellent suspension and dispersion; reduces shrinkage; and improves hardness.

Metallic beads in a 44-75 micron range are used where additional weight is required, such as nylon counterweight parts, or compounds for lawn furniture. Also are used as an antistatic additive.

Micro P resin extender is a noncombustible, chemically stable, inert amorphous mineral silicate. Micro P is stable/insoluble in water/organic acids; has high filler-loading capability and low moisture content; is nonthixotropic and nonhygroscopic. It reduces shrinkage and exotherm temperature and is non-conductive and compatible with flame retardants.

DODGE-REGUPOL, INC.

Cork is supplied in spherical, cubical, elongated, and shredded forms, in particle sizes of 1 in. to 150 mesh and densities of 3-12 lb/cu ft. Cork is an inert filler used to lower cost and density, to build viscosity, and to boost dimensional stability and coefficient of friction. It reportedly can increase thermal, acoustical, and impact-absorption properties when used in sufficient quantities. In most elastomer compounds it is said to reduce sideflow measurably.

DRY BRANCH KAOLIN CO.

Offers a wide range of kaolin clays. Hydrite water-washed grades are available in different particle sizes and resin demand, and are suitable for thermosets and thermoplastics--pH control assures proper cure and stability. Glomax calcined kaolin extenders are designed for optimum electrical properties in wire coatings. Partial Ti[O.sub.2] replacement is said to be possible in many sheet and molded products with Altowhite TE, a 93% brightness, high-opacity extender. Kaopaque, a delaminated aluminum silicate, is said to offer improved physical properties in most thermoplastics.

EAGLE QUALITY PRODUCTS CO., INC.

Mica products include Micaflex R and M used in all thermoplastic and thermoset resin systems as reinforcing fillers. R series exhibits low viscosity buildup in liquid resin systems (polyester and epoxy), reduces shrinkage and sinks, and is an excellent partial replacement for short-glass-fiber. In polyolefins Micaflex R produces higher elongation and unnotched Izod impact than other micas at comparable concentrations.

Micaflex M series is white and also compatible with all plastic systems. It produces clean, consistent colors, particularly in PP and thermoplastic polyesters.

ECC INTERNATIONAL

Produces fine-ground calcium carbonates Kotamite, Atomite, Micro-White 15, MicroWhite 15SAM, Supermite and Supercoat for compounding with PVC, PP and PE. Supercoat provides impact and gloss properties.

Snowflake PE affords low viscosity in production of SMC and BMC compounds. Polarite MLPA products are mineral-based, shrink-control additives for unsaturated polyester compounds. MLPA 1 and MLPA 2 thermoplastic-coated calcium carbonates act as a low-profile agent producing Class A moldings.

Supplies high-brightness hydrous kaolins, silane-treated kaolins and calcined kaolin.

ECOSTAR INTERNATIONAL

Ecostar is a hydrophobic starch used to provide a matte finish in PVC plastisol applications. It is also used as a biodegradation enhancer in extruded polyolefins and reportedly provides lowgloss finish and excellent antiblock properties in extruded film.

EMERSON & CUMING, INC. W.R. GRACE & CO.

Eccospheres are free-flowing, thin-walled hollow glass spheres ranging from 0.13 to 0.60 g/cc, and can be produced in various strengths and compositions. Special grades available with tightly controlled size distributions. Eccospheres can be combined with various resin systems to enhance electrical and thermal properties and reduce the weight of a system while improving the strength-to-weight ratio. Applications include thermal shielding, high-speed circuitry, syntactic foams, and as a chemically dean carrier for other substances.

ENGELHARD CORP., SPECIALTY MINERALS & COLORS GROUP

Offers four families of mineral reinforcements:

* Translink surface-modified calcined kaolin products enhance processing and performance characteristics.

* Satintone calcined kaolin extenders and reinforcements are inert, fine-particle-sized products having low residue and moisture.

* ASP-Buca-Catalpo hydrous kaolin products have various particle sizes and modifications, including surface treatments and delamination, and perform as extenders in various plastic and rubber systems.

* Emcor 66 ultra-short whiskers used in phenolic molding compounds for brake linings and nonasbestos gasketing.

EXPANCEL-NOBEL INDUSTRIES

Supplies Expancel expandable thermoplastic microspheres with ultra-low density (0.02-0.06 g/cc) and resilient properties. White spherical particles, available in 20, 50 or 80 micron diam., reduce weight, improve strength-to-weight ratio, raise R-value and compensate mechanical and thermal stress. Resilient nature makes a resin mix suitable for spray-up applications. Used in thermosets, elastomers and coatings.

Offers acrylic-based Expancel 091 with strong chemical and thermal stability. Spheres expand at temperatures starting at 266 F with densities as low as 0.21 lb/gal when fully expanded. Product offers new applications in extrusion, plastisols, latex, PU and RIM systems.

FIBER SALES & DEVELOPMENT CORP.

Solka-Floc is a cellulose filler said to improve impact strength and wear characteristics in moving parts. It boasts low specific gravity, controlled bulk, and good thermal properties. Filled urea compounds are reported to withstand temperature up to 170 F, melamine compounds to withstand 210 F, and darker colored phenolics to take even higher temperatures.

FRANKLIN INDUSTRIAL MINERALS

Produces Amical NSF-listed calcium carbonate in a wide range of particle sizes, including surface,treated products. This oolite material can be used in vinyl, polyester, and urethanes, and reportedly minimizes wear on molds.

Muscovite mica products, including surface-treated, available for use in PP, HDPE, phenolic, epoxy, polyurethane, and polyurea (RRIM).

Also alumina trihydrates and calcium surfate dihydrates.

FRANKLIN MINERAL PRODUCTS DIV. THE MEARL CORP.

Wet-ground muscovite mica consists of tiny, extremely thin flakes of a potassium/aluminum silicate crystal with traces of other elements. Flakes have a silvery, off-white color, average thickness of 0.5-2 microns and 2-150 micron diam. Product available in nominal 100, 160 and 325 mesh grades and in 1000-mesh and finer special grades. Wet-ground mica can increase stiffness, modulus, yield stress, breaking stress, and heat-deflection temperature. Its high dielectric strength and low power factor make it useful in electrical applications.

FUJIMI AMERICA INC.

Offers high-purity alumina and silica powders. Specializes in precision particle classification for abrasive powders and polishes and will customize ultra-tight, particle-size distributions down to submicron levels.

GENSTAR STONE PRODUCTS CO.

Offers fine-ground limestone (calcium carbonate) products said to be exceptionally white. Camel-Wite particle size ranges from 0.2-12 microns (average 3 microns). Aids viscosity control and glass dispersion in polyester SMC, BMC, prepreg, PVC, PE and PP. Low-cost Camel-Fil for SMC/BMC provides particle-size distribution for high loading and/or low viscosity. Camel-Tex and Camel-Carb coarser grades are used in BMC. Camel-Cal ultrafine grade has 90% of its particles smaller than 2 microns. Camel-Fine ultrafine grade has an average particle size is 2 microns. Camel-Wite, Camel-Cal and Camel-Fine available with stearate coatings.

GEORGIA KAOLIN CO.

GEORGIA MARBLE CO.

Produces finely ground, crystalline white marble fillers with a high percent of calcium carbonate. Products are specifically for polyesters, PP, PVC, epoxies, and elastomers. A stearate-coated grade approved for high-pressure potable-water PVC pipe and several grades of alumina trihydrate also available.

GLS PLASTICS DIV., GREAT LAKES TERMINAL & TRANSPORT

Offers fumed silica, which may be used for viscosity control or as a drying agent, reinforcement, or thixotrope. Soda-lime-borosilicate glass bubbles reduce the density of polyester castings and cost of cultured marble.

W.R. GRACE & CO. GRACE DAVISON

Supplies Syloid and Sylobloc pure, chemically inert, nontoxic synthetic amorphous silicas used in PVC, PE, PP, PVDC, EVA, CAB, and acrylics. Processing aids, when used in amounts from 1% to 3%, they absorb excess plasticizer, prevent caking of molding powders and plate-out, and promote printing-ink acceptance. Controlled particle-size distributions and good particle integrity inherent. Efficient flatting and antiblocking agents that yield high-clarity films.

Combinations of Sylobloc silicas and oleamide or erucamide slip aids also available. Combinations of antiblock and slip aids show improved efficiency over separate addition of two additives.

GREFCO INC.

Produces inert mineral fillers from diatomaceous silica and perlite, suitable for many applications. Dicalite diatomite multifunctional fillers are used for anti-blocking in PE films. In filled plastics they give dimensional stability. Dicalite perlite functional fillers help reduce weight and increase impact resistance through nondirectional reinforcement.

Dicaperl hollow glass microspheres improve impact resistance and machining properties and reduce weight in some formulations.

Distributes Solka-Floc cellulose fiber fillers, which improve impact strength and dimensional stability in molded thermoset resins.

C.P. HALL CO.

Fillers include micas and clays. Shell flour can be used as a low-density filler in phenolics and cast polyesters.

HARWICK CHEMICAL CORP.

Offers silicas, clays, calcium carbonates, micas and bituminous coal. Some grades are surface treated for ease of dispersion and improved reinforcing properties. Silane coupling agents also available.

J.M. HUBER CORP. CALCIUM CARBONATE DIV.

Produces functional filler/extenders, including calcium carbonate and barytes, in particle size ranges from 1.0 micron average partial size to 40-mesh granular. Surface-treated materials improve dispersion and permit increased filler loadings. "W" series is suited to SMC, BMC and RTM.

NSF-approved PVC pipe grades available, along with products for PVC (flexible, rigid, plastisols, floor tile) polyester, PP, epoxies, elastomers, urethanes and PE.

J.M. HUBER CORP. CHEMICALS DIV.

Zeothix precipitated hydrated silicas offer thixotropy and viscosity control. Zeothix 265 specifically designed to prevent sagging or running during cure of polyester laminating resins, gel coats, epoxies and PVC plastisols and coatings. Product helps in suspension and dispersion of solid fillers in liquid resins. As a processing aid in PVC plastisol and calendering operations, it is said to prevent plate-out, dry up excess plasticizer, and act as a free-flow conditioner where dry compounds are prone to caking or sticking. Beneficial antistat and antiblocking properties also reported.

J.M. HUBER CORP. CLAY DIV.

Supplies several types of water-washed, air-floated and calcined kaolin clays that reduce cycle times, extend resins without sacrificing physical properties, reduce pound-volume costs, improve processing and reinforcing properties, reduce mold shrinkage and creep, and improve heat-distortion temperature, electrical properties, surface smoothness, and printability.

J.M. HUBER CORP. SOLEM DIV.

Manufactures line of standard and surface-treated hydrated alumina fillers. Micral series of mechanically produced ultrafine hydrated alumina replaces precipitated ATH in most applications. Extremely fine particle distributions of Micral products are said to provide a high degree of active surface area for enhanced flame retardance, excellent surface profile, and high physical properties.

Custom-engineered ATH products are recommended for thermoset polyester, polyolefins, PVC, urethane, epoxy, phenolic, and rubber. Blends of hydrated alumina and calcium carbonate also offered for certain thermoset polyester applications.

ICI POLYMER ADDITIVES

Winnofil S is an ultrafine (75-millimicrons), surface-coated, precipitated calcium carbonate that reportedly improves impact strength of rigid PVC and can be used alone with polymeric impact modifiers. Designed for low-shear compounding, applications include rigid PVC conduit, pipe, gutters, and profiles.

IMI LTD.

Supplies surface-treated hollow ceramic microspheres for use in epoxy, phenolics, polyester, polyimide, PVC, PPS, nylon, PEEK, PP, and HDPE. Seven grades with an average particle size of 100 microns available in the Holospheres line. For liquid thermoset applications Metaspheres hollow alumino-silicate spheres come in two grades with average particle sizes of 100 microns and 150 microns.

Hi-K, a proprietary filler blend, is a conductive additive for thermal conductivity. Graf-Lite, a form of low-density graphite, is used in EMI/RH shielding compounds. High-aspect-ratio flake reinforcements with or without special surface treatments also available.

KAOPOLITE INC.

Offers Kaopolite anhydrous aluminum silicates for use as antiblocking agents. Available in a full range of particle sizes. Also surface-treated grades also offered.

Siltex fused silica provides outstanding electrical properties. Magotex fused magnesium oxide improves thermal conductivity. Ferrosil-14 ferro-aluminum silicate improves abrasion resistance. Fiberkal fibrous calcined kaolin available in a range of chopped sizes.

KMG MINERALS INC.

Provides muscovite mica highly purified natural silicate material. When used as a reinforcement in thermoset and thermoplastic composites, advantages include large increases in flexural modulus, HDT and reduced mold shrinkage. Offering low color, composites containing muscovite mica are easily colorable. Said to offer high heat resistance, excellent stability in the presence of strong acids and bases, high dielectric strength, insulating properties and extremely low toxicity. Grades vary in size from large flakes to very fine powders. Product maintains a plate-like shape with high diameter-to-thickness ratios.

HiMod 250 and HiMod 270, for use in polyurethane automotive exterior panels and fascia, provide superior warpage control, high HDT and class A surface finish. HiMod-450 reduces surface fiber read-through and overall warpage in TPO, RTM and RRIM. Products improve heat deflection temperatures and flexural modulus, and provide low warpage in HDPE, PP, nylon, PBT and PPS applications.

In-house surface treatment available for all mica products.

K-T FELDSPAR CORP.

Produces several grades of micronized fillers for use in coatings, polymer, sealant and adhesive applications. Minspar feldspar products are used in translucent or clear plastics because of their low tint strength and reportedly excellent abrasion resistance.

LUNDY TECHNICAL CENTER DIV. TRANSTECHNOLOGY CORP.

Romhoglas thermal and electrically conductive aluminum-coated glass fiber is available as rovings of various sizes, woven fabric, milled fiber and nonwoven conductive mat.

LUZENAC AMERICA

Offers a high-purity, asbestos-free platy talc, which is organophilic and hydro-phobic. Material has a small particle size and can be used at levels up to 30% of total mix.

MALVERN MINERALS CO.

Novacite silica products are a type of quartz having an average particle size of 3-7 microns. This natural microform differs from other silicas in its low sorptive properties and low abrasiveness. It is used as an extender/filler in silicone rubber, various thermosets, and engineering thermoplastics.

Novakup is a family of surface-modified particulate silica reinforcements, which can be treated with silanes, titanates, suffonyl azides, or glass resins.

Other surface-modified inorganic extenders, pigments and fillers are Trikup (alumina trihydrate), Monykup (antimony oxide), Titankup (titanium dioxide), Wollastokup (wollastonite), Carbokup (calcium carbonate), Silikup (silica), and Klakup (aluminum silicate).

THE R.J. MARSHALL CO.

Offers ATH, calcium surfate (gypsum), calcium carbonate, and lightweight fillers. Available separately or in combination, with guaranteed properties such as viscosity, gel time, and color. Special-effect fillers also available for cast polymer products.

MICROCEL TECHNOLOGY, INC.

Company manufactures Ceramcel low-cost, lightweight hollow ceramic spheres for use as fillers. Spheres are available in alpha alumina, mullite and porcelain compositions. They range in size from 1.5 to 7.0 mm and come with 10-20% continuous intergranular porosity. A second family of spheres is available with engineered porosity on the order of 100 [[micro]meter] extending through the shell wail. Because Ceramcel spheres do not have the extensive inner porosity of solid catalyst pellets, surface-active substances remain at the surface, maintaining maximum effectiveness.

MILWHITE INC.

Company's mineral fillers/extenders include celestite, barytes, calcium carbonate, attapulgite clay, bentonite clay, kaolin day, talc and slate.

Celestite is a high-specific-gravity filler said to have excellent loading characteristics. Product can be used for sound abatement, acid resistance, and in foams and plastics where weighting properties are needed. Barytes, available from several locations, are both white and off-white. Custom-designed products are available.

MINERAL TECHNOLOGIES, INC. DIV. OF PFIZER SPECIALTY MINERALS

Offers mineral fillers, including fine-ground limestones, precipitated calcium carbonates, tales and a line of surface-treated calcium carbonates of varying particle sizes. Hi-Pflex 100, Super-Pflex 200 and Ultraflex are surface-treated calcium carbonates for filling and reinforcing PVC, PP, PS, PE and other resin systems.

A line of surface-treated tales is also offered: Microtuff 1000 is designed for polyolefin reinforcement, MicroPflex 1200 for nylons, and Microtuff-F for FDA-approved applications.

ABT2500 and Microbloc antiblock tales for polyolefin films are also available.

THE MONTANA TALC CO.

Produces four distinct lines of ground talc. Grinds in each product line range from a relatively coarse 200 mesh used as an economical functional filler to superfine products with 1.5-micron median particle size used as reinforcing additives. Product lines are:

* Nicron for applications requiting high dry brightness and exceptional quality.

* Silverline for applications not requiting high dry brightness.

* Steriline for all USP, cosmetic, food and medical applications. Certified to meet USP, CTFA, and Food Chemical Codex specifications, as well as English, French, and German pharmacopoeia specifications.

* "Jet Stream" products have a controlled top size and provide vertical particle-size distribution. They are suited to applications that must have maximum loadings for economy, but still meet high performance standards.

NYCO MINERALS INC.

Wollastonite, a naturally occurring calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3), is the only pure white, wholly acicular mineral commercially available. Length-to-diameter aspect ratios typically range from 3:1 to 20:1. Either ball/pebble milled to mesh size, typically retaining a 5:1 or lower aspect ratio, and attrition milled to retain a high aspect ratio closer to 20:1.

WOLLASTOKUP chemically surface-modified wollastonites, help lower viscosities and raise loadings, aid dispersion, and improve physical and electrical properties even after exposure to moisture. Specific particle sizes and aspect ratios tailored to improve properties such as impact and modulus. Surface modifiers include titanates, suffonyl azide, ester-based wetting agents, and proprietary coatings. Special dual surface modifications in varying balances provide functional reactivity with the matrix resin.

Products used in nylon, polyesters, urethanes, thermoplastic polyester, polysulfone, PP, PE, phenolics, epoxies, fluoropolymer elastomers, and silicone rubber, as well as partial replacements of milled glass and minerals such as asbestos.

OMYA, INC.

Supplies dry- and wet-ground calcium carbonate. Wet-ground Omyacarb in fine and ultrafine grades comes with or without surface treatment. It's a high-purity, high-brightness grade used in rigid and flexible PVC siding, pipe, profile, calendering and wire/cable compounds, polyolefin film and injection molding. Dry-ground Omyacarb from 5 to 20 microns in mean diam. is for plasticized PVC, elastomers, epoxies, polyurethanes, and polyesters. Produced in California for markets west of the Rockies.

OYSTER SHELL PRODUCTS DIV. DRAVE NATURAL RESOURCES CO.

SF-4 ground and fractionated mollusk shells are 97.5% calcium carbonate by weight. Product is a general-purpose filler said to disperse well and impart smoothness to calendered and extruded products with less property loss than with fillers of comparable size.

PLASTIC FILLER SALES, INC.

Produces various grinds of calcium sulfate, alumina trihydrate, and calcium carbonate fillers available in 50-lb bags, bulk bags, and bulk truckloads. Custom blends available.

PLUESS-STAUFER INTERNATIONAL

Pluswhite precipitated white alumina trihydrate available in 8, 25, 50 and 75 micron average-particle-size grades. Low-viscosity grades offered. Because products are precipitated, very controlled particle-size distributions are possible, resulting in consistent viscosities. All grades are essentially free from contaminants.

PMS CONSOLIDATED

Specialty additive concentrates in either solid or liquid form, with or without colorants, are available containing fillers and other additives.

POLAR MINERALS

Provides premium grades of highly pure, low-iron, platy tales and high-purity calcium carbonates based on domestic processing of imported ores. Automotive markets are a key focus. Rigorous SPC/SQC programs reportedly ensure consistency of product.

POTTERS INDUSTRIES INC.

Offers solid and hollow glass spheres as engineering functional additives said to improve processing and flow, reduce cost, and produce isotropic, dimensionally stable molded parts. Maximum bonding with resin is obtained and properties improved with coupling agents. Spheres aid dispersion and reduce orientation of fibers in glass-fiber compounds. Silver-coated spheres also available for electrical and EMI shielding applications.

PPG INDUSTRIES FIBER GLASS PRODUCTS

Offers Hi-Sil ultrafine precipitated silicas as reinforcing fillers.

THE PQ CORP.

Q-Cel hollow microspheres are fine, inorganic spherical particles developed as low-density fillers/extenders for thermosetting plastics. Can be used in polyurethanes, plastisols, polyester casting, spray-up, SMC, BMC and syntactic foams. They are said to reduce part cost and/or weight, and to improve structural and performance properties. Applications include simulated-wood furniture parts, boat construction, synthetic marble, body putties, bowling-ball cores, SMC and FRP panels, and other composites. Glass and ceramic microspheres available in a range of particle sizes and densities, and with a variety of metallic or organic coatings.

Also offers surface-modified hollow ceramic microspheres using a patented surface-modification technology. Bubblekup extendospheres come in three grades from 57- to 100-micron average particle size and 0.7 specific gravity. XOL-200 Bubblekup, with 100-micron average size and 0.24 density, is used for liquid resin systems.

PREMIER SERVICES CORP.

Offers magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate.

PROGRESSIVE POLYMERS, INC.

Mineral filler concentrates available in a variety of thermoplastic resin carriers and in a wide range of filler loadings. Custom filler concentrate formulations with additive and processing-aid packages available. Concentrates eliminate nuisance dust problem of conventional powder fillers.

PROTEIN TECHNOLOGIES INTERNATIONAL

Offers Poly-Soy organic reactive extender for polyesters, PU, PVC and epoxy resins. True density is the same as most resins (1.2), yielding homogeneous blends without thickeners. Gel time and exotherm are reduced. Flame retardancy improved, especially in PU. Product derived from soybeans and is readily available. Current mesh sizes are -20/+60, -60, and -100. Extension up to 40% is possible.

P.S.H. INDUSTRIES, INC.

Epoxical Core Fill is an expanded shale aggregate designed as a lightweight filler for glass-reinforced epoxy laminates and low-density cores for foundry patterns and plastic tooling, including thermoforming models and molds. Available in two sizes and densities; the smaller particles have a bulk density of 8 lb/cu ft; the larger (random oval size of 1/4- to 1/2-in.), 40 lb/cu ft.

READE ADVANCED MATERIALS

Offers advanced metal, ceramic, and intermetallic particulate fillers and reinforcements for high-performance applications. Products can be made almost 100% pure, and in sizes down to 10 angstroms (nominal). Surface and chemically modified fillers, platelets, fibers, whiskers, microspheres (monoclinic and stabilized), conductive additives, borides, carbides, and nitrides also offered.

REYNOLDS METALS CO.

Offers regular and dedusted, atomized and flake aluminum powders, which are said to imprOve physical properties and machining characteristics.

RMc MINERALS, INC.

Offers magnesium hydroxide fillers, which reportedly improve smoke suppression in PVC and PE applications. Magnum-White and MGH-93 are milled to mean particle sizes of 2, 10 and 30 microns.

Magnum-White contains a minimum of 35% magnesium hydroxide and MGH-93 a minimum of 85% (average 93%). Product reportedly reduces or eliminates antimony during processing.

H.M. ROYAL, INC.

Offers hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica; airfloated, waterground, and ultrafine precipitated, surface-treated calcium carbonates; fine-particle talcs in light to dark shades including extremely white, fine-particle platy talc for modulus improvement and reinforcement; narrow-particle-range precipitated calcium carbonate (0.1-micron average size); and flame-retardant fillers, including magnesium hydroxide for flame and smoke suppression in halogenated and nonhalogenated systems.

Other products include filler-coated microspheres at 0.12 specific gravity for light weight; and micronized fillers, both talc and calcium carbonate, under one micron with very close top particle. cuts, specifically designed for engineered plastics and use in fibers.

SCHULLER INTERNATIONAL INC.

Celite diatomaceous silica and Micro, Cel synthetic hydrous calcium silicate can be used as functional fillers, processing aids, flaring agents, and anti-blocking agents.

SCM CHEMICALS INC.

Silcron amorphous, fine-particled silica gel comes in a variety of grades and performs as a thixotropic and flatting agent, in addition to preserving clarity and smoothness of finish. Improves dispersion of pigments and moisture control; eliminates blocking and plate-out; provides better mar resistance or better pencil and ink receptivity; and ensures smoother, uninterrupted flow of dry powders. It is a nontoxic, chemically inert powder averaging 4 to 8 microns in size, and can be dry-blended with resin or pigment powders, compounded into resin melts, or incorporated into a masterbatch or concentrate. Compatible with a range of thermoplastic resins.

SEEGOTT INC.

Offers diatomaceous silica, synthetic hydrous calcium silicate, calcium carbonates, tales, surface-treated calcium carbonates and talcs, plus a complete line of aluminum flake and atomized powders.

SHAMOKIN FILLER CO. INC.

Carb-O-Fil is a low-cost, black, inert carbon filler ground from coal, with a specific gravity of 1.47. It reportedly disperses readily and is used in PS, phenolics, urethane coatings, and polyesters.

SHERWOOD DIVERSIFIED INC.

Supplies alumina trihydrate, calcium carbonate, and talc fillers. Services include custom blending, custom coating of fillers with stearates, and matching particle-size ranges.

SILBRICO CORP.

Sil-Cell is a low-density, hollow inert filler, which displaces up to six times its weight in resin and can be used to replace up to 40% of the resin in a compound. This cellular mineral filler has an average particle size of 45-75 microns, is typically used in epoxies, polyester cultured marble, FRP tub/shower enclosures, decorative plaques, joint compounds, and furniture parts, and can be pumped and sprayed in liquid resin systems. Available with various surface treatments to control viscosity.

SLOSS INDUSTRIES CORP.

PMF fiber, used as a filler/reinforcer, generally improves properties and/or lowers cost (compared with milled glass) in nylon 66, PP, phenolics and PBT. PMF fiber can be used in greater amounts than short asbestos fibers without causing overly high viscosities and can be added along with other dry ingredients. PMF provides short fibers for filling inside corners, in molded in-hole areas and molded-in pin areas, which are usually fiber-poor. Shortness of the fiber allows it to flow well with the resin and reduces flow-line segregation.

Supplies bentonites, talc, antisagging/setting agents, gelling agents, thickeners, and suspension agents.

STEEP ROCK RESOURCES, INC.

Offers Snowhite high-purity, dry-ground calcium carbonates. Packing ratios and tightly controlled particle-size distribution reportedly allow optimized filler levels.

SUZORITE MICA PRODUCTS INC.

Suzorite-brand mica reportedly gives good flexural strength, heat-distortion resistance, high modulus of elasticity, and resistance to weathering, corrosion, high temperatures, warping, and electricity. It is available in grades ranging from fine powders to highly delaminated and coated flake, and can be injection molded, sprayed, and rolled. Surface-treated grades, called Suzorex, are available.

Suzorite E-Mica is an electroconductive mica produced by plating mica flakes with pure nickel. Plastic composites containing this mica grade are said to offer effective EMI shielding, low density, good processability, and a smooth surface that can be painted without further processing. Product is also said to increase flexural strength, improve heat-distortion temperature and resistance to warpage in composites because of its high-aspect-ratio flakes.

3M CO.

Industrial Tape and Specialties Div. offers hollow microscopic glass spheres with an average particle size under 70 microns. Density, strength, packing fraction, particle size, and percent of floaters are controlled so that products can be used in many forms. Scotchlite Glass Bubbles reportedly allow the user to design a compound or composite for best cost, weight, texture, shrinkage, and sanding time. Applications include autobody putty, automotive plastisols, urethane foam, polyester SMC, BMC, spray-up, and hand lay-up.

TRANSMET CORP.

Aluminum flakes and fibers are supplied for plastics requiring electrical and/or thermal conductivity. Applications include EMI shielding, electrostatic and heat dissipation.

UNIMIN SPECIALTY MINERALS INC.

Mines and processes silica, nepheline syenite and feldspar. Whole-grain and ground silica offered for polyester and epoxy systems.

High-quality nepheline syenite is appropriate for thermoplastics in which color is important. Nepheline also used in PVC and polyester gel coats to fill, but still maintain color clarity; and in BMC for patio furniture or microwave cookware for resistance to staining. Also a suitable antiblock for PE where clarity is important; an alternative to diatomaceous silica.

U.S. GYPSUM CO.

Anhydrous calcium surfate is available in two particle sizes: Snow White filler (8-micron average) and CA-5 (2-micron average). Snow White filler primarily is used in PVC resins and plastisols, and BMC. It is particularly useful when acid resistance, high loadings and white color are needed. CA-5 is successful in thermoset polyesters targeted for electrical applications.

Both fillers can be used to extend rigid and flexible thermoplastics, and reinforced and unreinforced thermosets. They are relatively soft (2.5 to 3.0 Mohs scale), which results in reduced equipment wear, and are very white in color (averaging 98 on the Beckman scale).

Also produces a calcium sulfate microfiber called Franklin Fiber filler. It is available in two forms: hemihydrate (H-30) and anhydrous (A-30). Used primarily as a reinforcing filler or thixotrope in thermoset polyesters, epoxies, phenolics and urethanes; it can serve as a partial or total replacement for asbestos, milled glass or wollastonite. Product offers excellent color, wear properties, dimensional stability and surface qualities. In polyester spray-up systems such as shower stalls and spas, H-30 offers blister resistance in boiling water, because of its ability to rehydrate.

CAS-20-4, an anhydrous calcium sulfate, is an extremely white, finely divided particulate filler with average particle size of 4 microns and top size of 20 microns. It is manufactured by controlled calcination, fine grinding and air separation of high-purity gypsum rock. The calcination process substantially reduces its moisture affinity. As a filler, CAS-20-4 is recommended for thermoplastics, thermosets and plastisol systems. It is approved for food-packaging applications because of its high purity and food-acid resistance, and is suitable for plastics systems requiring high filler loadings and balanced physical properties, As an extender, it can partially replace titanium dioxide in plastics systems and color concentrates because of its high brightness. CAS-20-4 is non-abrasive to processing equipment.

U.S. SILICA CO.

Produces Min-U-Sil micronized silica from 5 to 40 micron top size; Sil-Co-Sil ground silica from 40 to 125 micron top size; Snow*Tex calcined kaolin clay; and Imvitone/Imvisperse organoclay rheological additives.

Min-U-Sil and Sil-Co-Sil are used in epoxies and unsaturated polyesters. Snow*Tex is an excellent Ti[O.sub.2] extender for PVC systems. Imvitone/Imvisperse are effective rheological additives in plastisols and thermoset systems.

R.T. VANDERBILT CO. INC.

Nytal talcs are offered in five grades with average particle sizes of 2.3 to 38 microns.

Wollastonite is calcium meta-silicate for use in polyesters, nylon and other resins. Three Vansil grades are offered: Vansil W-10 (2% retained on 200 mesh), Vansil W-20 (2% retained on 325 mesh), and Vansil W-30 (0.06% retained on 325 mesh).

Two clay product lines in different particle sizes are Dixie Clay (0.2-micron average) and McNamee Clay (2-micron average).

Also offers Canadian-mined platy talc for talc-filled PP. Particle size ranges from median 2.2 to 13 microns.

WASHINGTON PENN PLASTIC CO.

Filler concentrates are supplied for PP, PE, and PS.

WHITTAKER, CLARK & DANIELS, INC.

Line of fillers and functional pigments includes clays (water-ground kaolins and bentonites), mica (muscovite and biotite), barytes (natural white and off-white grades), calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, and Polytal platy tales designed specifically for polyolefins.

ZEELAN INDUSTRIES,, INC. SUB. OF 3M CO.

Offers Zeeospheres--high-compressive-strength, thick-walled hollow ceramic microspheres--used as specialty ex-tenders in thermoset and thermoplastic systems such as SMC, BMC, RIM, RTM, compression molding, injection molding, extrusion, potting and casting applications. Available in a variety of particle sizes, including grades fine enough for use as antiblocking agents for films and other applications requiring very small and carefully controlled particle sizes. Products contribute to high filler loadings, to increase flow, improve surface finish and hardness, reduce shrinkage and warpage.

Also offers Z-Light Spheres, low-density, hollow ceramic microspheres with moderate strength (4000-6000 psi compressive strength), low density (0.6-0.7), and white color. They reduce density and enhance performance of cultured marble, SMC, and BMC and can be used in syntactic foams, marine construction materials, engineering and aerospace composites, and lightweight molded parts.
