In PVC plastisols and calendering, fumed silica soaks up excess plasticizer, provides thixotropy, prevents plateout, and keeps dry compounds free-flowing. Dielectric properties and heat stability also make it a suitable reinforcement for silicones and PVC electrical insulation.
Therrnax thermal carbon black produced via thermal decomposition of natural gas in the absence of oxygen has low-level structure and large particle size in several grades. Can be compounded at high loadings without degrading polymer properties. Provides very low abrasion, good dielectric properties, chemical and heat resistance, and low sieve residue values (typically 2 ppm on 325 mesh). Applications include XLPE wire and cable insulation, heat-shrinkable connectors, and general pigmentation.
Solid glass microspheres in various sizes reinforce and extend all thermosets and most thermoplastics for injection molding, extrusion, compression molding, and open-mold casting. Cork in spherical, cubical, elongated, and shredded forms is an inert filler used to lower cost and density, to build viscosity, and to boost dimensional stability and coefficient of friction. Particle sizes of 1 in. to 150 mesh and densities between 3-12 lb/cu ft. Reportedly can increase thermal, acoustical, and impact-absorption properties when used in sufficient quantities.
DRY BRANCH KAOLIN CD.
Hydrite water-washed kaolin clay grades in different particle sizes suitable for thermosets and thermoplastics. The pH control of grades assures proper cure and stability. Glomax calcined kaolin extenders give optimum electrical properties in wire coatings. Thermoplastic microspheres are ultra-lightweight, flexible, and resilient. Average density between 0.025 and 0.060 g/cc; average particle diam. of 20 to 140 microns. The morphology of boron nitride powder is platelet shaped. This characteristic provides superior thermal conductivity measurements when used as an additive in polymers and is said to outperform other ceramic, electrically insulating materials because of the platelet structure.
Applications where heat dissipation requirements continue to increase will see improved results and increased usage temperatures with the addition of boron nitride. Boron nitride has excellent lubrication properties, providing lower friction coefficients and reduced wear when used as an additive. It can also be effective as a nucleation agent or processing aid.

Dry- and wet-ground calcium carbonate. Micropoppers are 2-6 micron hollow polymeric microspheres, which expand to 10 times their original volume inside the resin matrix when heated to 265-300 F. Can be made of various resins including PMMA, PVDC, or SAN. Unexpanded density is just over 1.0 g/cc. Depending on wall thickness and coatings used, expanded density can range from 0.02-0.03 g/cc to 0.15-0.22 g/cc. Products have been used in PS and PVDC.

Magnum-White contains a minimum of 35% magnesium hydroxide and MGH-93 a minimum of 85% (average 93%). Reportedly reduces or eliminates need for antimony oxide.

PMF Fiber filler/reinforcer generally improves properties and/or lowers cost (compared with milled glass) in nylon 66, PP, phenolics, and PBT. Can be used in greater amounts than short asbestos fibers without causing overly high viscosities and can be added along with other dry ingredients. PMF Fiber consists of short fibers for filling inside corners, in molded in-hole areas and molded in-pin areas, which are usually fiber-poor. Variation in fiber length allows it to flow well with the resin and reduces flow-line segregation.

High-quality nepheline syenite is good for thermoplastics where color is important. Nepheline also used in PVC and polyester gel coats to maintain color clarity, and in BMC for patio furniture or microwave cookware that's resistant to staining. Also a proven antiblock for PE where clarity is important.
U.S. GYPSUM CO.
Anhydrous calcium sulfate in two particle sizes: Snow White filler (8-micron average) and CA-5 (2-micron average). Snow White filler is primarily used in PVC resins and plastisols, and BMC. It is particularly useful when acid resistance, high loadings and white color are necessary. CA-5 is successful in thermoset polyesters for electrical applications.
Both fillers can be used to extend rigid and flexible thermoplastics, and reinforced and unreinforced thermosets. They are relatively soft (2.5 to 3.0 Mohs scale), which results in reduced equipment wear, and are very white in color (averaging 98 on the Beckman scale).
CAS-20-4 anhydrous calcium sulfate is an extremely white, finely divided particulate filler with average particle size of 4 microns and top size of 20 microns. Manufactured by controlled calcination, fine grinding, and air separation of high-purity gypsum rock. Calcination process substantially reduces its moisture affinity. Recommended for thermoplastics, thermosets, and plastisols.
CAS-20-4 is approved for food-packaging applications because of its high purity and food-acid resistance. Product is suitable for plastics requiring high filler loadings and balanced physical properties. Can partially replace titanium dioxide because of its high brightness.
U.S. SILICA CO.
Min-U-Sil micronized silica from 5 to 40 micron top size; Sil-Co-Sil ground silica from 40 to 125 micron top size; and Snow-Tex calcined kaolin clay.
Min-U-Sil and Sil-Co-Sil contain at least 99.5% pure Si[O.sub.2] and are used in products requiring rigid control of physical and chemical properties. Durability and chemical inertness suit them to epoxies and unsaturated polyesters.
Snow-Tex, a superior Ti[O.sub.2] extender for PVC systems, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties and reduces the amount of costly pigments required.
