Filing brings historic firsts: "Automatic Discounts," and billing in less than one minute increments.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 1995--Southern Bell has filed tariffs with the Florida Public Service Commission that would offer automatic volume discounts, as well as long distance billing in less than a minute increments for the first time in Florida.

"Customers have said they want discounts and less complicated calling plans," Gaye Walker, Southern Bell spokesperson said. "We're listening to our customers. With competition for local service right around the corner we realize Floridians will soon have a choice for local service. We want consumers to choose us."

Southern Bell's new short long distance plan would eliminate the mileage bands and instead charge one rate, $.21 per minute. The evening and night discount periods have been combined into one off-peak period (6 p.m. to 7 a.m.). Saturday and Sunday are also included in this discount period.

All residential consumers who make more than $5.00 worth of Southern Bell's short-long distance calls, per month will receive an automatic volume discount of 20 percent; those making more than $10.00 per month will receive an automatic 30 percent discount.

"Southern Bell customers will also receive the benefit of 30-second initial and an additional tenth-of-the-minute billing, as opposed to the current full-minute rounding up on billing," Walker said.

Other items included in the filing are a reduction in Remote Call Forwarding; the introduction of a Business Saver(r) Service Plan; changes to the current WATS/WATS 800 Services; and an Operator-Dialed surcharge which applies only when the operator dials the desired number for a consumer.

The entire package will cut Southern Bell's revenues by $36 million annually. The filing is currently set for the July 18 FPSC agenda.
