Filenes's Basement signs first Manhattan lease.

In one of 1993's largest retail leases, Helmsley-Spear, Inc. has announced that Filene's Basement Inc., the popular Boston-based off-price apparel retailer, has signed its first Manhattan lease. The 32,000 square-foot deal for 2220-6 Broadway (at the corner of West 79th Street) is just 10 years with one five-year renewal option. Robert H. Gibson of Helmsley-Spear represented Filene's Basement.

According to Gibson, the Upper West Side offered a very promising location and was a key factor in Filene's Basement decision.

Filene's Basement plans to make this store its flagship location in New York City. The retailer recently worked with Helmsley-Spear to extend the lease on its 28,000 square-foot store at Fresh Meadows Shopping Center in Queens.

2220-6 Broadway formerly housed Lionel's Kiddie City Toys. Filene's Basement will occupy the entire building which includes two floors and a basement. Alan Simon of Jean-Marc Lever represented the landlord.
