Fighting cruel cuts must go on; RecordView.

MPs may have said farewell to Margaret Thatcher yesterday but examining today's political landscape, you can only conclude that her toxic legacy is as strong as ever.

The poor continue to get poorer and the rich continue to get richer.

The disabled and vulnerable of our communities are being fleeced by the Government to fund tax cuts for millionaires.

Despicable policies that turn the stomach of right-minded Scots are being imposed on the nation against the will of the public.

Yes, there can be no doubt that David Cameron and George Osborne are cut from the same heartless cloth as the Iron Lady.

And the devastation they are wreaking on Scotland is horrifyingly reminiscent of the chaos caused by the Tories during the Thatcher era.

For proof of that disturbing fact you need only look to the independent academic report published today on the true impact of the Con-Dems' cruel welfare cuts.

It shows the brutal reforms will cost Scotland around PS1.6billion a year.

That is equivalent to about PS480 for every adult of working age - with the figure rising to PS650 in Glasgow.

But the most striking part of the research is that it shows that the exact same communities are in the Tory firing line once again.

Those very areas devastated by Thatcher - the mining communities, the industrial heartlands, the shipbuilding strongholds - are the places that will be hit hardest by the dismantling of the Welfare State.

Thatcher came along 30 years ago and took away these people's jobs - 250,000 of them in Scotland alone - and consigned generations of families to the dole queue.

Now her smiling heirs Cameron and Osborne have arrived to take away the social safety blanket of the Welfare State that has been a lifeline to hundreds of thousands of people.

Thatcher may be gone but the fight against Thatcherism must continue.
