Fight on doorstep conmen.
A DRIVE to stamp out dishonest doorstep sellers will be launched tomorrow after a village near Coventry was identified as a rogue trader hot spot.
A special No Rogue Trader Zone will be launched in Binley Woods after police intelligence revealed there had been 52 incidents of bogus callers in the area over a two year period.
The new zone will be launched in Binley Woods tomorrow with 368 properties located in nine roads in the village included. The scheme will be operated by Warwickshire County Council's Trading Standards Service and supported by Warwickshire Police.
Paul Salisbury, chairman of Binley Woods Parish Council, said: "Binley Woods Parish Council has been pushing to become a No Rogue Trader Zone for some time now and residents are looking forward to the implementation of the scheme. "There are many traders knocking doors at all sorts of hours, especially inconvenient times, to push their products.
"Many of these products are not required but the approach and attitude of the traders is abusive and sometimes, threatening.
"The scheme will take a big step forward in removing the obtrusive actions of these people towards residents.
"I don't know any resident who sits at home waiting for a double glazing salesman, a tree specialist or even an ex-offender to visit. In this day and age, the yellow pages or the internet is a far better option."
Coun Les Caborn, Warwickshire County Council's community safety portfolio holder, said: "The local community in Binley Woods raised their concerns about doorstep crime and I am delighted that these hot spot areas will now be able to benefit from this initiative.
"No Rogue Trader Zones seek to protect the most vulnerable and elderly people in our community and stop rogue traders and bogus callers who seek to intimidate, con and scare people for their own monetary gains.
"Across Warwickshire, No Rogue Trader Zones have proved that they reduce visits from doorstep rogue traders and other bogus callers.
"I am delighted that we are able to extend this initiative to areas of Binley Woods."
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious doorstep sellers via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 040506 and Trading Standards officers will reply in person or by phone.
