Fifteem years on, it's Eddie the legal eagle.

Britain's most famous ski-jumper, Eddie The Eagle Edwards, has taken off in a new direction - graduating from university as a mature student.

The 39-year-old former plasterer, who shot to fame in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, has spent three years studying law at De Montfort University in Leicester. He achieved a 2.2 and had been due to step on to the podium to collect his degree this week, but had to graduate "in absentia" because of a scheduled operation.

He said: "I've been accepted to study the postgraduate Legal Practice Course, but I've decided to take a year out before going back to study to think about my options.

"The main reason I did the degree is because it opens up so many more avenues to me.

"I'm interested in the legal profession or possibly with the police."

Edwards divided his time between student digs in Leicester city centre and the house he shares with his new wife, Samantha, in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

The couple married in Las Vegas last month.
