Field-Flow Fractionation: Analysis of Macromolecules and Particles (Chromatographic Science Series/39). By Josef Janca (Marcel Dekker, Inc., 270 Madison Avenue, New York 10016, 1987. 336 pp. US$99.75). This well-written book serves as an introduction to the separation of a wide variety of macromolecules, colloids and particulate material of synthetic or biological origin using field-flow fractionation techniques. In general, field-flow fractionation is employing a laminar flow of a carrier liquid between two walls, which are placed at a short distance from each other and creates a parabolic velocity profile with zero carrier velocity at the walls and the maximum velocity along the centre axis of the so formed open channel. The sample is injected into the carrier stream, which enters the channel at the inlet, then is transported down the channel and exits through the outlet which is connected to a detector.

Janca provides a thorough description of types of fields and their physiochemical fundamentals, instrumentation, detectors and auxilliary equipment, its recent development and applications. The most valuable chapters describe practices and procedures including applications. This is more then one third of the book with references up to 1987 and provides a BASIC program for sedimentation field-flow fractionation data evaluation.

The book is clearly written, easy to understand and pleasant to read. It will be helpful to students in advanced undergraduate analytical and chemical engineering studies, and to polymer and analytical chemists and all who practice chromatographic and electophoretic methods and intend to know more about the state-of-the-art. Among the few reviews published on this subject, this appears to be by far the best.
