Fidelis Care New York Acquires Better Health Plan.

NEW YORK--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 21, 1997--The New York State Catholic Health Plan Inc. (d/b/a Fidelis Care New York) announced today the acquisition of the assets of Better Health Plan Inc. from Coastal Physician Group Inc. (NYSE: DR). Formal approval of the acquisition was received from the New York State Department of Health earlier this week.

Fidelis Care New York (Fidelis) is a not-for-profit managed care organization sponsored by the eight NYS Catholic Dioceses, with a unique philosophy that emphasizes caring for members in all areas of their life, wherever the need is greatest. This "Healthcare from the heart" is in keeping with the mission of the Catholic Church, and is at the core of Fidelis' commitment to treating members with dignity and respect. Licensed as Prepaid Health Service Plans, both plans contract with the New York State Department of Health for the enrollment of Medicaid recipients into managed care programs.

"The acquisition of BHP helps Fidelis with our strategy and mission of helping the underserved and providing services to Medicaid members, statewide," said Mark Lane, president and CEO, Fidelis. "Combining the provider networks and Medicaid contracts of Fidelis and BHP creates a very strong and cost effective delivery system for Medicaid recipients." The acquisition of BHP increases Fidelis' total statewide enrollment to 60,000 members.

Fidelis will continue to provide high quality service to current members of both Fidelis and BHP and to any new Medicaid recipients. Neither members nor participating providers are expected to see any noticeable changes during this transition period.
