Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) and Perkins have announced a strategic cooperation that will result in a new 3.4 L industrial engine designed to meet EPA's Tier 4 interim and EU Stage 3b emissions regulations. The new electronically controlled engine will cover a power range between 60 and 115 hp. The engine, dubbed the 854E by Perkins, will include a range of technologies, including common rail fuel injection, smart wastegated turbocharger and aftercooler, all of which will be regulated by full-authority electronic controls. Starting from 2011, the engine, which develops a peak torque of up to 310 lb.ft., will be available in the 2200 to 2500 rpm speed range. The FPT plant in Turin, Italy, will manufacture the new engine and start delivering to Perkins in 2011 as part of a long-term agreement.
