Festo cylinders self-adjusting air cushioning.

The UK's largest supplier of compressed air products and process systems, Thorite, can now supply cylinders with integral self-adjusting air cushioning, designed for use in a wide variety of machinery found in the manufacturing, packaging, printing, food and processing industries.

Cushioning is an important aspect of cylinder operation, improving product life by taking out sharp impacts that can damage the actuator, products on the machine or the machine itself. Insufficient cushioning produces damaging impacts, but excessive cushioning results in extended cycle times.

Up to now the choice has been restricted to low cost elastomer cushioned cylinders, which absorb some of the energy at the end of the stroke, reducing, impact noise and inertia, but can only cope with relatively slow speeds and masses.

Alternatively there are expensive and difficult to set up manually-adjustable versions, where getting the correct set up needs careful and time-consuming cylinder cushioning adjustment, dependant on the speed of operation and the mass to be stopped.

Designated as DSNU-PPS, the new cylinders from Festo bring users all the benefits of adjustable air cushioning but without the problems--there's no set up, no adjustment needed for varying speed or mass and no need to open or work within guards.

Best of all the Festo DSNU-PPS self-adjusting cylinders cost less than adjustable air cushioning versions and provide far superior cushioning performance than elastomer buffers.
