Festivals for whale-watchers - in Mendocino, Fort Bragg.

The towns of Mendocino and Fort Bragg will celebrate the passing of the gray whale (on its northward migration) with a two-weekend whale festival this month.

Activities begin March 15 and 16 between 10 and 4 in Mendocino with free lectures and films at the Ford House Museum; from here, a free guided walking tour goes out to the Mendocino Headlands to watch for migrating mammals.

At various galleries, you can taste country wines ($5 buys a tasting glass, or bring your own) and look at or buy wildlife art. On Saturday at 11, taste crab cioppino ($5) in Crown Hall on Ukiah Street.

In Fort Bragg on March 22 and 23 between 10 and 4, attend an art show at the Gray Whale Inn, 615 N. Main Street, or a 60-booth arts and crafts show and sale at the Pentecost Hall on Stewart Street and IWA Hall on Redwood Avenue. An orchid show, doll show, and clam chowder tasting are also planned.

The big Whale Festival Run starts at 10 A.M. Sunday. Entry to the half-marathon, 10-kilometer, or 2-mile run costs $14 ($8 under age 18).

Both weekends from 10 to 4, the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, normally closed to the public, will open for tours. To get there, take State Highway 1 north 5 miles from Mendocino and follow signs.
