SALZBURG, AUSTRIA: On his 250th birthday, Mozart is the muse at the 2006 Salzburg Festival, which mounts 10 theatrical productions, 67 concerts and Wolfgang's complete oeuvre of 22 operas, including the early Mitridate, Re di Ponto (pictured), based on a Racine drama. This striking co-production with Musikfest Bremen is an encore from last year. Director Gunter Kramer takes opera staging to experimental extremes, incorporating rotating rear walls that allow glimpses into the catacombs of the royal palace, a mute chorus in crimson jackets and a huge mirror that refracts the whole peculiar spectacle. A more contemporary offering is Peter Handke's 1973 play Die Unvernunftigen sterben aus (They Are Dying Out), directed by rising star Friederike Heller. And as usual, festivalgoers can see Everyman, the mystery play that has become practically synonymous with the festival since its inception in 1920. But even there the winds of innovation blow: Henning Bock directs a revival of Christian Stuckl's 2002 interpretation, which boasts, among other adjustments, a female Death.

Such meetings of different generations of dramatic thought are happening this summer not only in Salzburg but on festival stages all over the globe. This special section contains dates and contact information for 138 events in 55 countries. Some are on the fringe, others on the street; some are devoted to lavish classical presentations, while still others are a celebration of the host country's local theatre scene. All promise dramatic adventures, no matter where your travels take you.

STRATFORD, CANADA: Actor Colm Feore wrests new significance from Coriolanus at this year's Stratford Festival. Feore also stars as Fagin in the Lionel Bart musical Oliver!, directed by his wife, Donna Feore. Brian Bedford puts on the director's hat for London Assurance, designed by Desmond Heeley, who is briefly coming out of retirement. And pictured are Nigel Shawn Williams and Karen Robinson in the Shakespeare-inspired Harlem Duet, writer/director Djanet Sears's 1997 play that traces the personal and racial aftershock when Othello abandons his first wife, Billie, for a white woman.

SIBIU, ROMANIA: Theatre groups from 10 different countries have collaborated for this year's Sibiu International Theatre Festival on productions specially designed to be staged in the medieval churches and castles of the region. On its more conventional stages the festival will also host such far-flung companies as Colombia's Mapa Teatro, Poland's Teatr Biuro Pordrozy, and South Korea's Nottle Theatre (with The Return, pictured). This 13th edition is seen as a dress rehearsal for next year, when Sibiu will serve as the 2007 European Capital of Culture.

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND: What do a Brazilian dance company, a South African vocalist and an Icelandic puppeteer all have in common? They share space on the Reykjavik Arts Festival program, along with We Are All Marlene Dietrich FOR, created by Reykjavik's own Erna Omarsdottir (pictured) and Emil Hrvatin. This dance-theatre work meditates on the relationship between soldier and artist in the moments they come together, one to be entertained by the other.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY: A man tries to pack an apparition into his suitcase, and balloon body-parts pop all over the stage, yet somehow the question persists: "Are you awake or dreaming?" Sweden's Cullberg Ballet brings its dance-theatre exploration of surreality, A Sort Of (pictured, choreographed by Mats Ek), to the 15th International Istanbul Theatre Festival, which doubles this year as the 4th International Theatre Olympics. In addition to 16 Turkish companies, a bevy of international heavy-hitters will attend, including Peter Brook with The Grand Inquisitor and Sizwe Bansi Is Dead, Tadashi Suzuki with Ivanov, and Piccolo Teatro of Milan with its widely-toured Arlecchino.

CHARLESTON, S.C.: The young Singaporean writer-director Ong Keng Sen hopes to demystify the culture of Japanese pleasure women in Geisha, his new music-theatre work. Commissioned by Spoleto Festival USA, with a $35,000 grant from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, the intriguing piece stars the acclaimed kabuki theatre performer Gojo Masanosuke, an onnagata specializing in women's roles, the African-American actor Karen Kandel (as narrator) and two musicians, one playing traditional Asian instruments, the other better known for his work as a DJ and electronic artist.
