Fears for future as two village post offices shut.

A VILLAGE post office has shut and another has announced a "temporary" closure.

Kirkheaton Post Office in St Mary's Lane, Kirkheaton, closed its doors on Wednesday after the resignation of the postmaster.

Long-running efforts to secure an alternative location failed and there is a question mark over whether it will reopen elsewhere.

And another community is also to lose its counter service. The Post Office has announced that Greenside Post Office in Mirfield is to go.

The post office in the One Stop shop in Greenside Road will close "temporarily" on February 16.

The Examiner reported last July that Kirkheaton Post Office was to be relocated to Krishans newsagents in Town Road, closer to the centre of the village, but that appears to have fallen through.

In a brief statement, a Post Office spokesman said: "The postmaster at Kirkheaton Post Office has resigned.

"The branch was operated by an independent retailer and the premises are currently withdrawn from Post Office use.

"We would like to reassure customers that we are committed to maintaining Post Office services to people in Kirkheaton and we are working hard to restore services to the community as quickly as possible."

a " In Mirfield the Post Office has issued a letter to customers saying that the Greenside Post Office operator had also resigned and the premises withdrawn from use.

It described the closure from February 16 as "temporary" and said it would welcome "any applications from potential retail partners interested in running the branch locally on our behalf."
