Fears Eta will escalate attacks; SPAIN INTERNATIONAL.

Spain's acting interior minister says the country is headed for violence from Basque separatist group Eta.

Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said Eta had been dramatically weakened by years of arrests and a lack of support in the Basque region and internationally, and will seek to give an appearance of strength with attacks.

Eta ended a cease-fire in 2006.

In the latest attacks it detonated a car bomb on Friday in the northern town of Calahorra.

A suspected Eta gunman killed a former town councillor in the Basque region on March 7.
