Feargal's sad farewell.

Byline: EAMONN MACDERMOTT

FEARGAL Sharkey carried his father's coffin at his funeral in his hometown yesterday.

James Sharkey died on New Year's Eve in the residential home where he had been living for the past number of years.

The 99-year-old was buried following a ceremony in St Eugene's Cathedral attended by his family and his many friends among the Derry community. Son Feargal, the former lead singer with The Undertones, no longer lives in the city but returned for the funeral.

The family have long been involved in musical circles in the area and while James himself kept a lower profile he helped organise the Derry Feis.
