Favourable first draft for Racing Louisville.

RACING Louisville FC now feel more formally part of the NWSL after the expansion draft was completed.

It's a unique concept used in US sport across all their professional leagues, and the draft format starts the formal process of the club building their playing squad for their inaugural season.

Owners of USL side Louisville City FC announced they would be joining the NWSL 2021 season back in October 2019 and since then have built the foundations, including developing new facilities for the women's team and appointing key staff members, including new head coach Christy Holly.

Prior to the official draft on Thursday, one deal was already confirmed. Chicago Red Stars would protect all their remaining squad players, and instead trade with Louisville the Japanese midfielder Yuki Nagasato and US youth international Savannah McAskill.

From afar, the trade seems very favourable to the newcomers but only time will tell.

The rules are exhaustive, but in summary each team protects 11 players from their squad and leaves the remainder "exposed".

Those exposed are then picked from, a bit like in the school playground, in a predetermined and timed order. Each team can lose a maximum of two players, but that's reduced to one if that player is a US women international.
