Fatal smash driver named.

A man who died when he was thrown from his car was named today.

Jamie McCaig, 27, of Pleasant View, Consett, County Durham, died after he lost control of his vehicle at around 3.25am on Monday.

He had been travelling north-bound along the A182 in the Houghton area, near the Biddick Woods roundabout, and died from his injuries.

Police are still not sure why Mr McCaig's Ford Escort left the road but they believe it collided with the central reservation barrier.

The car then became airborne and he was thrown from the driving seat, suffering head injuries.

An inquest was formally opened and adjourned by the Sunderland coroner, Derek Winter, yesterday so Mr McCaig's family can make funeral arrangements.

The results of a post mortem will be given when the inquest is resumed later.

Mr McCaig was single and lived at home with his parents, Bruce and Elaine McCaig.
