Katherine Sturtevant's A TRUE AND FAITHFUL NARRATIVE (0374378096, $17.00) tells of a father's warning to his daughter about the power of words--and Meg's delight in both her father's bookstore and its visitors and her own writings. When her best friend's brother sets sail for Italy Meg scoffs at his romance with words of jest--and finds that his ship has been captured and he's been sold as a slave. Has her thoughtless words caused it? Meg must now use her writing powers to bring him home. Kids 12 and up will find it a pointed story of a girl's strength and talents. Brenda A. Ferber's JULIA'S KITCHEN (0374399328, $16.00) tells of a catering business run by a mother who lets her daughter help out. Mom's challah and cookies were famous--but now Mom is gone, killed in a house fire while Cara was away--and Cara struggles with her grief, with being a survivors with her father, and with finding a way to heal them both in this gentle story of love and recovery.
