Faroes can reign in Spain.

FOOTBALL LIECHTENSTEIN v FAROE ISLANDS 7pm THE FAROE ISLANDS are favourites to prevail in this clash of the minnows and they should justify their odds and record a rare victory when they take on Liechtenstein, writes Joe Champion.

This friendly, played on neutral ground at the Estadio Municipal in Marbella, marks the first time these nations have met in any form of international fixture since 2002. They have faced off three times in all with the Faroes winning on each occasion.

History is unlikely to have a significant bearing on the result here, but recent form is usually a fair indicator and the Faroes have been climbing the Fifa rankings since the appointment of current manager Lars Olsen in 2011.

Olsen, who captained Denmark to their 1992 European Championship triumph, recently masterminded two Euro 2016 qualifying wins over hapless Greece - who were managed by Leicester's Claudio Ranieri.

They lost their other eight matches in qualifying but only once were they beaten by more than two goals, going down 3-0 against finals-bound Romania. They are now ranked 93rd in the world, 70 places above tonight's opponents.

As is often the case with international minnows, Liechtenstein put up some decent performances alongside some truly dreadful ones during their unsuccesful qualification campaign.

The Blue & Reds held both Montenegro and Moldova to draws in Vaduz and even managed to pick up three points away to Moldova in Chisinau, with 98-cap veteran Franz Burgmeier scoring the goal in a 1-0 victory.

But they sunk to a 5-0 defeat at home to Austria and an embarrassing 7-0 loss to Russia in September, their heaviest defeat since 2012.

The Faroe Islands recorded their biggest ever victory when they beat Gibraltar 4-1 in a friendly in March 2014 but Liechtenstein could only draw with those opponents on Wednesday night.

The Blue & Reds have won just three matches since 2012 - two of those victories coming against lowly-ranked San Marino and Andorra - and they can be backed at 9-4. But if the Faroes can show the ability that helped earn those wins against Greece then they should prove victorious and at 13-10 they make the most appeal.
