Farmers advised to water wheat at grain formation stage.
MULTAN -- Agriculture experts have advised farmers to apply water to wheat crop at the delicate stage of grain formation.
In a release issued by media liaison unit of Punjab agriculture department, experts said that wheat was an important food crop that meets almost 75 per cent of domestic food requirements. It gets maturity in 140-160 days from sowing to harvest.
Experts warned that shortage of water and hot weather conditions can weaken the grain and reduce production. They advised farmers to apply water when process of grain formation begins or when grain is in milky condition.
However, farmers should apply water at this stage while keeping in view the weather forecast. For weather forecast, they can turn on their TV sets and defer the water application for a few days in case of forecast of rain or dust storm. However, they may opt for light irrigation in the evening instead of the day time when there is no wind blowing so that plants do not fall due to heavy grains.
In case, the soil need fertilizers at grain formation stage, farmers can apply soluble Potash at the rate of 5-10 kilogram per acre with water application through Potash fertigation technique. Or else, they can opt for foliar spray of one per cent soluble NPK in 100 litres of water per acre to get higher production.
