Farmer critical after tractor and lorry crash.

A farmer was in a critical condition after being air-lifted to hospital with head and leg injuries suffered when the farm tractor he was driving was in a collision with an articulated lorry on the A5 at Gailey, near Cannock.

Mr Edward Duggins, who farms at Gailey, was thrown from his tractor in the accident.

Pc's commendation

A beat bobby who hopped on a bus to catch two suspected offenders has received a police commendation.

Pc Peter Cox was patrolling Walsall town centre when he was told two men had been seen acting suspiciously.

The officer, who is 6ft 6in tall and weighs 20 stone, got on a No 51 bus and caught up with the men as they got in a car in Ablewell Street.

A search of the car unearthed a haul of heroin with an estimated street value of pounds 1,000 and a subsequent search of an address in Birmingham led to the seizure further drugs.

Two men have appeared in court charged with drugs-related offences.

Accident fatality

A 20-year-old man was killed in a two-car collision at the junction of Bridgnorth Road and Wightwick Bank at Wightwick, Wolverhampton.

Police said Mr Anthony Smith, aged 20, of Craddock Street, Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton, a passenger in one of the cars, was dead on arrival at hospital.

A town crier will have something to shout about at the launch on Saturday of a scheme to provide new trees from old.

Local town crier Bevan Craddock will be on hand to make sure everyone gets to hear about The Forest of Mercia, which is being planted across the Lichfield, Cannock Chase, South Staffordshire and Walsall.
