Custer joined Farm Journal in 1998 as vice president, marketing for Farm Journal's Database Strategies Division. He was promoted to marketing director, publishing in 1999, became publisher of Farm Journal and Top Producer in 2000 and gained general manager duties for Database Strategies in 2002.
Custer owned and operated his own marketing consulting firm before joining Farm Journal Media and Farm Journal was one of his clients. From 1981 to 1992, he served in a variety of capacities for Young & Republican Advertising following a stint as a Research Supervisor at both DDB Needham and Leo Burnett in Chicago.
