Fans enjoy a picnic with George.

JAZZ legend George Benson opened the Summer Classics concerts at Southport last night.

The R 'n'B star performed a spellbinding outdoor set at the town's Victoria Park.

Young pianist and singer Jamie Callum, described as the David Beckham of the jazz world, supported the veteran star.

Fans began queuing three hours before last night's concert. Many picnicked on the grass during the balmy evening concert.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was taking centre stage today in a performance of favourite classics, compered by Liverpool ECHO arts editor Joe Riley.

Today's performance marks a milestone for four Philharmonic musicians as orchestra leader Michael Stewart, principal viola David Greenlees, harpist Eleanor Hudson and percussionist Neil Hitt bow out in their final appearance as members of the Phil.

The orchestra will be looking to emulate last weekend's electrifying performance at the Kings Dock ``last night at the proms'' spectacular.
