Family tree.

In our regular look at the structure of North-East companies, we focus this week on Newcastle-based Universal Building Society, founded in 1863 and now with branches across the North-East and Cumbria.

Kevin Robinson

Kevin was made a director in 1992 and appointed chief executive in 1997. He has more than 28 years' experience in the financial sector and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He joined Universal in 1977 as internal auditor and became secretary in 1985.

Kevin Basey

Kevin focuses on financial control, management and planning and strategic business development. He spent 13 years at Northern Rock before moving to Northamptonshire as chief financial officer with AMP Bank, where he was responsible for finance, legal, compliance, and the start-up operation.

Gillian Tiplady

Gillian is a qualified solicitor and worked in private practice for 12 years. She has been with Universal for four years and has responsibility for compliance, legal, insurance and is secretary to the board. Gillian was appointed a director in 2003 and also works on a range of business development and diversification projects.

Steve Watchman

Steve is responsible for IT services within the society, as well as contributing to overall strategy as a member of the executive management team. With this wide-ranging brief, Steve is inspired by the differing and stimulating challenges it offers.

Jill Duffy

Jill is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and has responsibility for management of human resources, ensuring the excellent working conditions at the society are maintained. Jill also oversees the management of the facilities function, responsible for office administration.

Ian Stafford

Ian is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and has worked for the society for almost 15 years. He is responsible for developing the society's lending strategy.

Paul Cormack

Paul has extensive experience in the finance sector and is responsible for overseeing sales and marketing for the society's distribution channels.

Amanda Walters

Amanda is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and has extensive experience of the financial services sector. Her brief is to deliver excellent customer service standards and focus on business retention.

Sarah Lewis

arah has more than 11 years' experience in the financial sector and she is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. She joined the society in 1994 and became assistant general manager of finance in 2004. Sarah helps to develop policies and procedures in line with legislation.

Sarah Peverley

Sally has an impressive track record in commercial lending and an excellent understanding of the property sector. Under her guidance the society's commercial lending department has continued to grow since its launch in 2004.
