Family pay tribute to 'gentle giant' after horror road crash.
THE family of a 'gentle giant with a heart of gold' who died after a car struck his mobility scooter have paid tribute to him.
Michael Smith was taken to hospital following the crash, which took place on Poolstock Lane, in Worsley Mesnes, Wigan.
A black Vauxhall Zafira was travelling towards Wigan town centre when it collided with Michael's scooter.
It then left the carriageway and ploughed into the front of a house.
Michael, 53, died of his injuries in hospital following the tragedy, which took place on Michael Smith February 28 at around 8.50pm.
A tribute released by his family said: "Michael was a gentle giant. He had a heart of gold and would try and help anyone. He was the most caring person and would phone up his mum numerous times a day.
"We are all very much in shock and no words can describe how much pain we are all in."
Three people were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Two men, aged 19 and 29, have been released on bail while a 14-year-old boy has been released with no further action.
