Family leave highlights pact.

A 2-year collective bargaining agreement between Dominick's Finer Foods and Locals 881 and 1540 of the United Food and Commercial Workers allows 10,000 clerks in the company's Chicago, IL, area stores to take up to 90 days of unpaid leave to care for a newborn child or a seriously ill member of the immediate family. Employees who take leave are eligible to return to their own or comparable jobs without a loss of seniority, but will be required to pay for health insurance premiums incurred during the leave period.

The settlement provides wage increases of 20 cents to 80 cents an hour over the term of the contract. Department heads receive wage increases of 30 cents an hourretroactive to September 1991, an additional 30 cents an hour in September 1992, and 20 cents an hour in March 1993; regular clerks receive wage increases of 10 cents to 30 cents an hour retroactive to September 1991, and 10 cents to 30 cents an hour in September 1992, with top-rated clerks getting an additional 20 cents an hour in March 1993; clerks in supplemental departments receive wage increases of 10 cents to 30 cents an hour retroactive to September 1991 and an additional 10 cents to 30 cents an hour in September 1992; and utility clerks receive wage increases of 10 cents an hour retroactive to September 1991, 10 cents to 15 cents an hour in September 1992, and 5 cents to 15 cents an hour in March 1993. At the expiration of the previous agreement, pay rates were between $10.65 and $13.70 an hour for department heads; between $4.75 and $10.50 for regular clerks; a range of $4.75 to $8.50 for clerks in supplemental departments; and between $4.25 and $4.85 an hour for utility clerks.

Other terms include retaining current health care benefits, with company contributions to health insurance costs set at $1.30 per hour worked, from 90 cents an hour, retroactive to January 1, 1992, and advancing to $1.48 an hour in September 1992; a union shop clause requiting new employees to join the union at the start of their employment; and an agreement by the company to consider using Dominick's clerks in grocery jobs in the company's Chicago area Omni stores.
