Family firm that's actively growing; Small Businesses.

A FATHER and son-led firm of independent financial advisors has announced plans to grow the family business.

Active Financial Services, which employs seven people in Guisborough, aims to expand through organic growth, acquisitions and joint ventures.

It will recruit two or three more financial advisors before the end of the year and at least one additional administration worker.

But while Active is looking for additional premises, owner-director Glyn Pemberton is determined the business will not leave its home of 22 years in West-gate, Guisborough.

"We aim to export the successful formula that has seen us prosper," said Glyn. "If it works in Guisborough, we can export it elsewhere."

Discussions are at an early stage with firms of solicitors, estate agents and accountants over a joint venture that could see the four businesses share premises and offer customers a one-stop-shop of financial planning services.

The hunger for growth follows the arrival of Karl Pemberton, Glyn's son, as sales and marketing director, after a successful career in banking spanning 12 years.

The father and son team aim to expand Active in two key areas - Active Direct, a marketing-led business specialising in mortgages, secured loans, life insurance and income protection, and Active Wealth Management, concentrating on higher net worth clients and dealing with investments, retirement planning, wills, trusts and inheritance tax planning.

A key element of Active Direct will be an internet comparison site for life insurance, for which Active is the regulated partner, which will serve customers all over the country from a North-east base.

"Plans for the comparison site are well advanced and have the potential to be a huge success and integral to our growth ambitions," said Karl, who spent 10 years with Yorkshire Bank and, more recently, two years with RBS.

"Active Financial Services has been built on the strong personal relationships my father has with his clients, and the trust and loyalty they have for him.

"Our plans for the business are a merger of the two approaches. The strongly-principled ethics and attention to customer service that has served my father so well, and the development of exclusive products and services that will strengthen the Active brandname and make it more widely recognised."

Later this year, Active and a legal firm will jointly host the first in a series of quarterly seminars, to take place at different venues in the region, offering advice on inheritance tax and estate planning.
