Family counsellor interacts with clients on Twitter.

Dubai: Dubai Courts Department (DCD) opened its Twitter account for direct and live communication with its top family counsellor, who has interacted with dozens of tweeters and answered their inquiries about reconciliation procedures.

In an hour-long initiative titled aACAyAn hour with an official', dozens of followers exchanged tweets with Dr Abdul Aziz Al Hammadi, DCD's Director of the Family Guidance and Reconciliation Section, on Tuesday.

DCD launched the initiative to strengthen its relationship with its clients and to grant the public the opportunity to communicate with its officials closely and with more proficiency and transparency.

"I received plenty of tweets during the hour. The tweeters' inquiries mainly concentrated on the procedures of how to open a reconciliation file at the section," Dr Al Hammadi told Gulf News. The Arabic twitter accounts can be found with Dubai Courts.

A reconciliation file is a form of a legal procedure that spouses take whenever they want to seek guidance and/or counselling pertaining to family disputes to either reach an amicable reconciliation or divorce.

"Tweeters mainly asked about the procedures and documents required concerning reconciliation files. They also asked about the formalities of how to open a file, the legal period during which a spouse can open a file and the mechanism of how reconciliation committees function," he explained.

Reconciliation committees comprise family and marriage counsellors, who offer guidance and/or advice to resolve pending disputes among families and spouses in disagreement before reaching divorce.

When asked by a tweeter about the section's best achievements in 2013, Dr Al Hammadi revealed that they received 4,675 reconciliation files and nearly 64.5 per cent of these files were settled amicably.

"Tweeters asked about the laws that are applied during the reconciliation process. They also asked about how a spouse can confirm his/her divorce and how much does the section rely on technicalities during the reconciliation process. As a matter of fact, we have adopted technology since 2002 in applying all our procedures. . Currently, we are in the process of launching a smartphone application that enables our clients to remotely open a reconciliation file. Once the applications become available, all that they will be required to do is fill in their names and details of their marriage contracts and Emirates ID. They will be granted a reconciliation file number and an appointment with one of the family counsellors," Dr Al Hammadi told Gulf News.
