Family church; YOUR LETTERS.

MY ATTENTION was drawn to a recent ECHO story about Saint Agnes Church, in Ullet Road, Sefton Park.

My parents were married there in 1914, and my sister, brother and myself were all baptized there. My elder brother was married at the church in 1941 and I was married there in 1943.

I was a choirboy, first at the daughter church of Saint Pancras, in Lidderdale Road until 1929/1930, then to Saint Agnes, where new organist Dr Caleb E. Jarvis FRCO had just taken over from Mr Stammers, the previous organist.

I can just recall "Daddy" Elcum, the first Incumbent, who I think died in 1929. We did not then use the term Father for the vicar ? the term "Daddy" was used because Mr Elcum was so old.

And I have known every vicar there since then.

There was a very strong music tradition at the church, and both men and boy choristers were paid. Settings and anthems were always sung at each service in cathedral style, with appropriate discipline.

I remained as a boy chorister until 1936, and a few years later I went into the Royal Navy. The Rev.

Tommy Holme, the then vicar, gave me a wonderful reference which has taken me through life.

I was not able to rejoin the choir until after the war. when my work permitted during the 1950s, when I sang tenor. The choir then was still of a very high standard and singing with us at the time, both as a boy and later a bass singer, was the well known Richard Stilgoe.

At the ripe old age of 81 years, I am still singing ? though now at St.

Mary's Parish Church, West Derby.
