MY DEAR mother has recently gone into a care home. I have been sorting through her belongings and found a small box that I had never seen before. This box contains photographs, postcards and other items relating to my late father's war service in north Africa and Italy.

At the bottom of the box I found some air letters written to Dad from a lady living in Liverpool.

She was the mother of Dad's best friend who was killed in the desert campaign. The friend's name was Joseph Weir and I don't know his mother's Christian name as she signed her letters "mother Weir".

My father must have really grieved for his friend and wrote a beautiful poem in his memory.

I can see from 192.com that there are a lot of Weirs still in Liverpool and I wondered if any of them are related to Joseph and his mother.

They lived at 14 Allenby Road in the early 1940s. I would love to hear from anyone who knew Joe and might like to see some photographs and a pen and ink sketch of his battlefield grave done by my dad.

There are a lot of photographs of my father with one particular man and I wonder if it is Joe.
