Families Beginning Together.

Families Birthing Together is built around the practice of Laura Hamilton, a licensed direct-entry midwife practicing in the state of Washington. Its focus is on home-birth: why couples choose it, the joy of it, the variety of choice.

The video gives an excellent example of how a professional midwife conducts prenatal care, attends women in labor and birth (five births are shown, with emphasis on the families and their variety of experience, rather than on the didactics of how birth occurs) and postpartum followup. The births include a VBAC at home, a birth in water and two on hands and knees (I agreed with the mother who complained that she was so cut off from what was going on in that position--it took so long for her to get the baby). The hundreds of happy couples are emphasized through Laura's newsletter and annual homebirth picnic.

Laura, who trained at the Seattle Midwifery School, provides an excellent example of the professional midwife. She is sensitive and caring in her interactions with the families, articulate as she lectures to a college class, and confident that "babies come out," something she learned while working with midwives in Santa Lucia.

The quality of the video is excellent--professional in all regards. This is an excellent video on midwifery and birth at home--highly recommended.
