Factory orders up in June.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up four of the last five months, increased $6-billion or 2.9%. This follows a very slight (0.3%) gain in May and a decline in April.

A huge bump in orders for ships and boats helped drive bookings up, and significant monthly gains also were seen by makers of defense communications equipment, electrical equipment, and industrial machinery. Orders for machine tools and other metal working equipment declined 1.2% in the month.

For the first half of the year, orders to American factories for all durable goods total $1,278-billion, or 9% higher than the figure a year ago.
