Face-lift for tank on tap.

Byline: Nick Kotsopoulos

The 500,000-gallon Chester Street water tank is undergoing repairs and a face-lift.

The tank, which was put into service in 1967, has served as an important part of the city's drinking water distribution system.

But an inspection in 2009 found that while the tank is structurally sound, the tank must be painted inside and out to ensure its continued reliability.

Robert L. Moylan Jr., commissioner of public works and parks, said the contractor hired to do the job, Classic Protective Coatings of Menomonie, Wis., will work on it from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

The work is expected to be completed by June 15.

Mr. Moylan said the initial work will involve blast cleaning the inside and outside of the tank before the painting can begin.

He said a containment structure will be erected around the tank to prevent paint and metal debris generated during the blast cleaning from escaping into the environment.

Mr. Moylan said the blast cleaning and painting are, by their nature, rather noisy processes, so limits on hours of work will be strictly enforced.

The new Kevin D. Lyons Baseball Diamond at Rockwood Field will be dedicated April 21.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Among those expected to attend are Worcester State University President Barry M. Maloney, Mayor Joseph M. Petty and City Manager Michael V. O'Brien.

It will be followed by Worcester State Baseball Alumni Day, as the Lancers will take on Bridgewater State University in a doubleheader. The rain date is April 22.

Mr. Lyons, former proprietor of the Press Box on Lincoln Street, passed away in October 2008. He was an outstanding baseball player in high school (St. Stephen's) and college (Worcester State).

He was the first member inducted into the Worcester State Athletic Hall of Fame and was also the school's Baseball Player of the Century.

In addition to his sports accomplishments, Mr. Lyons was well known in the city for his active support of local youth and interscholastic athletic teams and for the charitable events he sponsored and chaired.
