ACCOUNTING & AUDITING FASB's site provides you quick access to authoritative statements, publications and exposure drafts. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board's growing website features the online registration form for auditors of public companies as well information on rules, standards and enforcement. Financial Executives International has a comprehensive, easy-to-follow index of financial reporting pronouncements, as well as in-depth information on new regulations and free videos of educational sessions and seminars.

BUSINESS VALUATION Business Valuation Resources offers financial and transactional data relating to the sales of public and privately held companies, control premiums, minority discounts and marketability discounts. You can pay per inquiry or buy an annual subscription. First Research provides (for a fee) more than 140 industry profiles along with quarterly updates.

CONTINUING EDUCATION The California CPA Education Foundation has courses and conferences--online, on site and resort offerings--and nearly every course you need to meet your 80-hour CPE requirement.

CPA PORTALS AccountingWEB provides news and information about the CPA profession, as well as career, practice, CPE and other resources. Accountants World provides easy links to just about everything: the Big Four, IRS, FTB, state societies and accounting firm networks. It also provides daily accounting news updates. SmartPros has something for everyone--accounting and auditing, personal financial planning, HR, tax, technology and more. There's also news from around the globe that is presented daily. WebCPA offers online editions of Accounting Today, Accounting Technology and Practical Accountant, plus industry rankings, columns and daily news.

CPA ORGANIZATIONS CalCPA's online resources grow daily. Want live links for every URL listed in this magazine? Check out the online version of California CPA. While you're there, seek out professional knowledge, renew your membership or activate your Find a CPA listing. Lots of CPA-specific information, and updates on AICPA standard setting, exposure drafts, conferences, products and services. Also valuable is The California Board of Accountancy's site offers the latest in licensing requirements, including changes to continuing education requirements, renewal information and more.

ELDERCARE CalCPA's Persona Financia Panning Committee has assembled a listing of eldercare resources throughout the state. Whether you're looking for a homecare provider in Sacramento or the Social Security Administration office in San Diego, this is your place. Learn about the issues important to your elderly clients at the AARP website, including information on legislation, research and finances.

FINANCIAL PLANNING estate Co-sponsored by CalCPA's Estate Planning Committee and the Los Angeles Chapter Estate Planning Committee, this discussion board provides an open forum for asking and answering estate planning questions.

www.factiva,com Factiva is a joint venture between Dow Jones and Reuters, offering--for a fee--customizable business news and research, including articles from The Wall Street Journal. Financial Planning Interactive, offers industry news, practice management tips, surveys, software, chat forums and educational opportunities. Yahoo Finance offers customizable features to keep track of business and finance. Another great resource for market news and information on just about everything finance-related. The Motley Fool promises "to educate, amuse and enrich," giving easily digested, in-depth information on personal finance, with an emphasis on investing. This site offers just about everything you need to know about Sec. 529 college savings plans. A special section for professionals provides information on courses, tax resources and a newsletter. Registration is free, but required.

GOVERNMENT The IRS' constantly updated website is not just for downloading tax forms; among its features is breaking news and information for tax professionals. The California State Board of Equalization has information on pending legislation, free seminars and other tax-related information. The California Franchise Tax Board's website provides information on e-filing, downloadable forms and a plethora of state tax links. When Alan Greenspan talks, the world listens. Find the Federal Reserve chairman's speeches, along with breaking news, monetary policy, reporting forms and everything else to do with the central bank. The source for news and information on state and local government accounting and financial reporting standards. Visit the SEC website for all your final and proposed regulatory notices, legal bulletins and webcasts.

INDUSTRY starting_business The Small Business Administration offers help on developing a business plan, getting a business license and establishing patents and trademarks. BenefitsLink provides free compliance information and tools for employee benefit plan sponsors, service providers and participants. Check out the "Q&A Columns" and "Benefits BUZZ" for in-depth compliance information. The California Chamber of Commerce is loaded with resources for California businesses. Don't forget to sign up for "Labor Law Extra," an e-mail update on human resource issues. This great resource for financial executives includes daily news articles, an online archive of the monthly magazine and coverage from CFO Europe and CFO Asia. Membership is free. FindLaw is a clearinghouse of law resources that covers everything from traffic tickets to intellectual properly.

INTERNATIONAL Charged with developing a single set of global accounting standards, The International Accounting Standards Board's website features project summaries, standards and exposure drafts. CalCPA's Global Opportunities Committee offers a Global Resource Directory designed to help CPAs do business around the world. From the first page, click "Resources," then "Global Resource Directory."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT CalCPA's Management of an Accounting Practice Committee has sample letters and memos, a comprehensive disaster recovery planning guide and the MAP Doctor Hotline. CalCPA's Human Resources Committee site has sample HR forms, and links to articles and sites that help in hiring, retaining and managing staff. CAMICO provides professional liability insurance to CPAs. Policyholders get access to risk management tools, a loss-prevention hotline and even tax advice. The Group Insurance Trust of CalCPA offers quality, cost-effective insurance to the owners and employees of CaICPA member firms. The site offers quotes, enrollment forms and plan information. This home page for the Society of Human Resource Management is a clearinghouse of information on work force studies, regulations, management ideas, conferences and seminars. A collection of online payroll tools useful for employees and employers alike that helps calculate paychecks, deductions, stock options, 401(k) plans and bonuses, as well as links to a number of HR sites.

SALARY SURVEYS marketO.htm The Accountants Inc. 2003 Compensation and Benefits Guide offers California-specific information so you can determine your worth in your area. FreeResources Robert HaWs 2003 Salary Guide isn't available online, but you can order this desktop reference here and add to your bank of salary data.

TAX The CCH Internet Tax Research Network is the online component of the company's publications that provide subscribers with in-depth tax law information. Spidell Publishing's site is devoted to California tax information and offers breaking news, notice alerts, seminar schedules and product information. This well-organized tax and accounting website gives links to everything imaginable, from academia to news to software, also offers a vast collection of no-frills, every-topic-under-the-sun links. Both sites are maintained by CPAs. ValuationTable.htm One for your clients. They might not think taxes are fun, but this Donation Valuation Table is handy and makes estimating easier.

TECH SITES Software, hardware, training--CalCPA's Technology Committee has the goods on just about anything you can do with a computer, including links to a number of sites we couldn't fit in this article. The Extensible Business Reporting Language provides a common platform for critical business reporting processes and improves the reliability and ease of communicating financial data among users internal and external to the reporting enterprise.
