FWA ACHIEVES TOTAL FOOTAGE DRILLING RECORD IN 1992; DRILLING RESULTS RANK COMPANY NO. 1 IN TEXAS AND NO. 3 IN NATION

WICHITA FALLS, Texas, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- FWA Drilling Company, Inc., announced today that it established a record for total footage drilled in 1992.
The Wichita Falls-based company drilled 470 wells last year having a cumulative depth of more than 4 million feet. FWA surpassed the 4-million-foot milestone for the first time in its 55-year history.
FWA President Tommy Knowles said, "This was an outstanding feat considering that during 1992 the industry suffered the most depressed market for contract drilling in modern history. The industry's average rig count for 1992 fell to approximately 720, a 16 percent drop from 1991."
Data compiled for 1992 by Petroleum Information Corporation (PI) ranks FWA third in the nation in terms of both total footage drilled and in total wells drilled. "While these high national rankings are gratifying," added Knowles, "it's important to note that all of our 1992 drilling activity occurred in one state -- Texas -- where we easily ranked No. 1 in both total footage and total wells drilled."
According to 1992 data PI had accumulated as of early February 1993, FWA drilled nearly 900,000 feet and 90 wells more than its closest competitor in Texas last year.
"Considering the dire industry environment, FWA people turned in an exceptional performance in 1992," stated Knowles. "For the year, we had an average of 17.1 rigs working out of our total of 27 land rigs, which translates into a 63 percent utilization rate, up 31 percent over the prior year.
"Our late-1991 reorganization proved beneficial last year as we were able to perform profitably in all three of our operating areas -- West, East and South Texas. Another notable improvement was the reduction of our lost-time accident frequency rate by 50 percent from 1991."
FWA is a component of USX Corporation's Marathon Group (NYSE: MRO).
