If you believe the sky is falling on the auto industry, you might be surprised to learn about a bit of a local upturn. You'll also find that Mercury's Villager, Ford's "Desk Drive" and Lincoln's "Marque X" offer excellent photo opportunities.
The first minivan for Lincoln-Mercury dealers, an "office on wheels" concept vehicle based on the Ford Explorer and a luxurious Lincoln concept convertible are being showcased by Ford Motor Company at this year's Atlanta International Auto Show, March 11-15.
The all-new 1993-model Mercury Villager is designed to appeal to prospective sedan and station wagon buyers who want the added flexibility of a minivan. Villager contains a high level of standard equipment and an interior with upscale, car-like features. It will be available in two models, GS and LS, at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships beginning in July.
Ford's concept vehicles, "Desk Drive" and Lincoln Marque X, combine high technology with practicality -- an appealing package for those with "on-the-go" lifestyles.
"Desk Drive" follows an executive office-on-wheels concept, created to show off the versatility of the highly successful Ford Explorer compact utility vehicle. "Desk Drive" is fully equipped with leading-edge office and communications equipment. For example, there is a computer with a seven-inch television screen capable of displaying television-quality messages and advertisements through a VCR, a cellular telephone, a FAX machine and a voice-actuated memo pad. Convenience features such as a refrigerator and microwave also are featured. "Desk Drive" creates an ideal environment for people who have to get their jobs done while they are on the road.
Practical technology also is showcased in the Lincoln Marque X convertible with an extensive list of features -- such as a voice-activated telephone, navigation system and a FAX machine. Marque X is a four-passenger vehicle which utilizes a cab-forward design to maximize interior space. Marque X is designed to appeal to the driver who appreciates elegance but also wants performance and handling. Marque X shows the public how Ford envisions the future for Lincoln.
Also to be shown, the 1992-model F-150 Flareside -- which returned to the F-Series truck line this year -- has more contemporary styling and interior refinements. Flareside features F-Series refinements, a new fiberglass and steel pickup box and two unique exterior body colors -- including "Iris" which will be featured in Atlanta.
